Trying to get a handle on what people like for bases, lining etc.

Post by ediesbeads on Thu Aug 22, 2013 8:54 am

So after reading a LOT, I seem to be seeing some themes... tell me if this is true of most of you...

People like Snaz paints for a base layer.  They don't like Wolfe or Tag because it's a little more "waxy"?  What else do you like for bases?

Snaz doesn't make good homemade split cakes.  The colors are too muddy. What brands would you suggest for homemade cakes?

People don't like Snaz for line work.  It's too watery?  Doesn't make crisp, dark lines?

So, realizing all people prefer different things... would you say these themes are often true? Would you add anything to this list?

Thanks!

Paradise is also a softer paint for bases, seems good for sponging or brushing in my opinion but they are harder to make splits with due to the softness. Tag is good for homemade rainbow cakes and one strokes and so is Diamond FX also wolfe would work well, they aren't quite as soft but have great color combos that you can copy to make your own. Anything with the waxy consistency is easy to cut up. I am currently switching all my single colors over to paradise because they seem to be the easiest to use for me when doing brush work. I will remain using wolfe black and white though for linework until something better comes along. Starblends are also great for blending colors but they are dry powder makeup and definitely require some learning. Just my take on it...I have never tried the Kryolan or the Ben Nye MagiCakes.

Waxy:
Tag
Diamond FX
Wolfe
Cameleon
Fab reg. colors

Creamy:
Snaz
Paradise
Fab Shimmer or glitter colors

well I like paradise and snaz for base, yes. but I have no problem using the snaz for linework either-the only issue is it gets like a taffy or pudding-or sourcream type of consistency on hot days...too goopy to work with.but I've found that most of them get this way with high humidity.

The best way to circumvent this problem and eliminate it is to mix it into a smaller "dippy pot" like metina suggested, and it is the perfect consistency all the time for line work.

A good brush is key too...leow cornell synthetic or da vinci.

also, I just recently made my own snaz split cakes-they blend sooooooooooooo well, and not muddy at all!

I have one made from tourquiose and purple, one from purple, pink and orange, one from orange and yellow, and one from green, yellow and orange...I also have snaz sparkle purple and pink, and a cake of snaz red and white for spider man that has not gotten muddy at all.

I really enjoy snazaroo, I think the color goes on well if you apply it at the right consistency...before an event, I wet all of my sponges, squeeze them dry, and put in a bag.....at the event, I just grab a damp sponge-no water added at all.
for the brushes, I spray them with water-not the cakes.

very easy to use paint, and very capable of some amazing effects.

I prefer TAG for bases and sometimes linework. And Wolfe or DFX for lines.
