New from Hudson Valley

Post by StephanieKiDooodle on Fri Oct 18, 2013 1:20 pm

Hi Folks,
I am new to face-painting (did it just a year now) in the Hudson Valley Area. I have done charity work as a clown, and have been told this is a viable option for coming back into the working world. I've been a stay-at-home, home-educator for the last 12 years and am looking for something I love to do for when my last student graduates in 3 years. I love face-painting. How can I make this a profitable business? Where I live, people seem reluctant to pay for me to come, and I am reluctant to work for free. I've had some success, but it has been hard to get hired. Any advice on starting out, requirements for business DBA, taxes for NYS, insurances, anything like that...is especially appreciated.

Dear StephanieKDoodles:
Welcome to the Forum!
There is a thread for newbies to post and share their art work to a warm, kind, non-judgemental audience on Show and Tell. There is a game of Face Paint Tag going on in TAG! You're it!
Don't work for free.
Free work gets you more free work.

Happy Painting!

Stephanie, there are always alot of people who want it for free... no matter where you are located. Keep looking and get your name out there. Many people don't realize the amount of time, money and SKILL that go into having a facepainting business. YES, it is the greatest job in the world and it's sooooo much fun... but that doesn't mean it is not HARD WORK. Painting a MOVING canvas, bent over all day, dealing with different... let's say temperments and all while we continue to SMILE! THAT is SKILL! Keep at it and remember you deserve to get paid and you will.

The physical part is so true. I have learned to keep arnica on hand for the time after a long gig to combat muscle soreness.

Hi Stephanie, As you've already heard - don't work for free, but do keep spreading the word - passing out cards, telling EVERYONE you do face painting, etc.. It may be a little slow to start, but once word gets around and people see your talent, the work will increase. The secret is persistence. Best of luck and welcome to the forum.
