Another Question....regarding your board.

Post by jnzfoo on Mon Nov 04, 2013 9:46 pm

You will all kick me off soon, I swear. I just want to know everything and I feel like such an infant in this world! SO, If you are going to a ppf how many faces are on your board? I'm trying to figure out which ones to put on, which are most poular, which I should practice the most. That sort of thing. Which do you find you use the most? I swear when I get a few things figured out, I'll quit asking questions....maybe ;-)

It depends on you and your ability, really. If you are fast and good at a lot of designs and can do them quick from memory, I would suggest 5 girl and 5 boy designs. Don't make a huge board with too many choices as this will make it harder for kids to choose. Staples that are always popular are girls : butterflies, princess, fairy, unicorn and spiderweb mask in pretty colors
Boys :spiderman, batman, horn mask, dragon and tigers
Tigers are a good choice for girls and boys.
Since it is a ppf thing, you want to make sure the choices you give are ones that you can do quickly while still making them look good.
Of course this is my opinion only. Just giving examples of what kids request most in my area lol

But you are Shannon Fennell , us mere mortals can't compete with that lol. If I gave 189 choices, I would be spending all day looking at pictures trying to remember what to do on the designs. You have a design book in your head, and not all of us can do that

I actually have been using a smaller selection for the speed gigs... only 32 designs on that. The big board is out for the large private parties though. Thing is I don't paint anything EXACTLY like the photos, never have, and no one has ever complained.

189!! That is incredible! I would love to get my hands on that! Lol. I'm not super fast at masks and the bigger stuff yet, but I can do some speedy tryout cheek designs. I'm just trying to build my selection and I want to start with designs that will be used. Smile thanks!!

I know, I would love to have the ability to just think of a design and it would flow freely off my brush. Alas, I may get to that point, but got a long way to go.

Jnzfoo, In my experience, it takes as long, and sometimes longer, to do cheek art (especially if the cheek art is really detailed). What helped me speed myself up is watching youtube videos of Lisa Joy Young, Silly Heather, Becstar Anthony and others who freely give their time to help us newbies improve our skills. I still have a long way to go, but the best advice is practice, practice, practice. Tear drops, swirls, thin-thick-thin lines etc and there are videos everywhere to help.

Debbie,
I love lisa joy young! Watching her study is what made me want to do this. I'm going to look up those others right now. I feel the same way about wishing I could imagine up and paint! the kind of stuff I've seen out there. Luckily for me, four of my five kids love to have their faces painted and think my recent decision to do this for real is the best ever. Lol hopefully they don't get such of it. Smile

You can put in keywords on here like "butterflies" and you will see many videos and step by step pics that are a great help. Also, go to facepaintingtips.com and under the blog tab, there are many videos there, as well. Sillyfarm.com has a video corner where Silly heather puts many videos and the best one is she shows different brushes and the best uses for them.

Be careful, it is highly addictive lol!

As far as kids go, they will probably get to where they scatter and hide whenever you pull out a brush. At least, that's how it went for me. Very Happy

Re: Another Question....regarding your board.

Post by Savvy on Tue Nov 05, 2013 4:34 pm

This is really long, sorry ahead of time! Hard to believe it's been about 2 months since I joined this forum and a month since I've started my business! I am still very much the noob too and about to make my first major paint/brush purchase *panic*! There are a few things I've learned doing my first 3 paid gigs and 3 charity events:
1) Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance (SAS mantra). For my first ppf events, I picked 10 girl, 5 boy, and 5 unisex mask/eye/half face designs. That way I knew which ones to practice. For my charity event, I picked 4 eye/mask designs and the rest was cheek art.
2)Take good, clear, vibrant pictures of your designs, put them up on a simple board with clear pricing. My pics were 4"x5" on letter paper. I would have preferred 5"x7" glossy photos, but my printer is ancient.
3) Practice, Practice, Practice! Butterflies, a swirl/tear drop eye design, Hello Kitty (cheek art and mask), Minnie Mouse, dolphin on the waves, tiger, zebra, batman, spiderman/venom, and monster eye/mask with horns were my most popular. For cheek art, I had 20 designs. The heart design on the Snazaroo booklet with the name in the center was very popular, Minions were super popular, Hello Kitty, Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc., sports balls with flame, angel wings, and the horse head were popular.
4) Paint: keep it simple, keep it smart. I chose the TAG 12 color palette because I like how vibrant and opaque they are, and it has a lot of paint in 32g pots! I was torn between TAG and Paradise's 30 color palette because of price and color choices. I also looked at the Paradise 8 color palettes, but I'd end up buying all 3 to get the colors I needed. Paradise feels better on the skin than TAG (which makes skin feel tight), but the colors appeared more dull and seemed to rub off easier to me. DFX and Wolfe didn't have big palettes, so I didn't consider them. One Strokes: I didn't have any one strokes for these events, which would've helped for speed and simplicity. If I had it to do again, I'd get or make TAG 1 stroke: Dragon for flames, hibiscus flowers, and dragons; Snake for leaves, snakes, dragons, and dinosaurs; Unicorn for crowns, flowers and unicorn hair; 4 color rainbow; ocean for dolphins and waves; and black iris and either Berry or Stargazer Lilly for roses. Then I'd expand my eye designs to include more crowns, flowers, dragons, dinosaurs and unicorns. AND I'd be a lot faster at what I was already doing.
But paint colors are SO very addictive, it calls me like Gollum to the Ring LOL Wink I've asked some new FP friends to keep me in check and tell me when I'm about to go overboard. But I'm fairly certain this paint purchase I'm about to make will be my last for at least a year, probably longer.
I hope my long-winded short novel has helped in some way. Stay creative!

Savvy,
Thank you!! So much great info! I've been back and fourth between tag and paradise for base colors. I did get a few one strokes all 3 of which you recommended! Whew. I totally know what you mean about "precious" paints! I had a hard time just picking a few and not spending too much! (can you spend too much) lol.
