Brushes getting soft!why?

Post by nikkili26 on Sun Dec 08, 2013 7:42 pm

As I use my brushes more and more, some of them have gotten so mushy soft in the bristles that they don't give me the sharp precise lines i'm expecting.

Is this normal?they are now "bendy"...i'd say almost too "bendy", whereas before they weren't stiff, but they were very firm and held their shape well.

I use all taklon brushes-synthetic....is there something breaking down the fibers?
I do dip them in alcohol for a minute to sanitize, and if i do use soap, it is something meant for brushes.
The water is usually luke warm unless i don't have soap or sanitizer, then I will use hot soapy water.

This happens to all brushes after a while. I have found a few things that seem to help them last longer.

1. I don't let my brushes sit in my water basin bristles down.
2. For storage I use a brush holder that rolls up instead of using a pouch so that the tips don't get bent during storage.
3. After cleaning I will put just a little makeup on it to get it to hold the point instead of it drying and seperating.

Since I started doing these things my brushes seem to have lasted longer than before.

Unfortunately brushes no matter how good you take care of them never last forever...I tried to make a few favs work and had to retire them....I use them for painting with acrylics now. I miss the original Donna Dewberry flat brushes.

Not all "taklon brushes-synthetic" are equal. Brush quality is like most things their are just some better brands.

An occasional deep cleaner with a conditioner (like Masters) and brush restorer (like Mona Lisa) help brushes live longer.
