Practice...

Post by Saraendepity on Fri Apr 04, 2014 3:15 pm

Who/how do you all practice? I have three children (one is too young -8 months and another is at school so not available a lot of the time) my middle girl loves being painted but always wants butterflies which is great as I get to practice brushwork but I need to practice more faces... How do you all practice?? I'm gona make OH model for me when my new paints arrive haha!

Dear Saraendipity:
I have two practice heads…
Headley LaMarr and Teenage Head.
They are good for practicing designs, not for blending colours.
I also purchased "Tattoo Practice Skin".
Hateful stuff.
Again, good for designing, not so much for blending colour.

I have discovered that the rolls of craft foam are excellent for designing new ideas.

The best discovery of all…
my ample upper thighs are excellent canvasses. We are painting upon skin, so it makes sense to me to paint on something that is close to our actual product.

I have three daughters… and they went through a period of NEVER wanting their faces painted. At 21, 19, and 16 years old, they are more emendable to face painting.

I did ruin two sets of king sized sheets, by painting Tribals on my legs with Wolfe Black. I have since invested in black sheets.

Um, i do not think you wanted to know this. Just do not read the above paragraph.

Happy practicing!

I practice on my thigh right by the knee. Except for a nose, lips and eyebrows, it kinda looks like a face  Smile

It's skin, anyway. I don't like practice heads. I have one in the basement now, face up, that stares at me from the bottom of the stairs. I am going to sell it in the swap shop here whenever I get a free minute to list (not anytime soon, trust me!).

It knows it is being swapped. It knows, it knows ...

I'd turn it face down, but then it could use the leverage of its hard plastic proboscis to roll over and hit the bottom step, and then thump, thump, thump, all the way up the stairs while I sleep ... Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation

Fess, you are so funny!  I too, have ample thighs that I practice on.
My favorite set up for practice is the same set up marcella uses on fabatv.  It's my eisel with a foam black foam board attached, but instead of regular paper I clip wax paper to the board to paint on.  I find the consistency more like skin than paper is.  Plus having the paper upright on the eisel is more like my real work setup.

I also have 2 hair school practice heads but I find the constant washing and reapplying of hair spray on the skin to be a hassle when I'm trying to spend my time practicing.

Oohhheerrrr toe rice heads scare me !!! I could never have one in the house! Haha! I never thought about thighs! I've tried on my inner arm but it's not wide enough and it is awkward as I like to rest one hand and paint with another... Impossible aha!!

I will look into some foam ... And black sheets Wink haha!!

I like to practice on my own face. I've read that lots of people don't like to, and find it difficult, but I don't mind... I'm just not fast when I paint on myself!

I also like that I can then take photos, and use the nice ones in my portfolio! I think a real face looks nicer than a practice head when you're showing pictures to prospective clients. Just my two cents!

I paint myself more than anyone else. It's the most challenging and critical canvas option I've got! Smile

I have a family of practice heads, boy, lady and 2 girls, I bought a couple of little practice heads in Europe, ( I think barbie is so expensive) so they sell other doll for the girls to practice make up and hair styling, I bought them at garage sales for 2 Euros but I saw them in stores new at 15 Euros, they are perfect kid size face and the pictures look pretty for a menu sample if you need it.

I use a practice head as well, but as others have said, blending on it , is awful. And I can't manage decent teardrops, swirls or flowers on it. But I'm still glad with it , it does help because I can click it on the table so I also practice how to hold brushes / sponges etc.

But my arms, legs are used as well Smile

I try painting on myself, but I find it quite hard to do.

Here's the glass head with a quick design - needs a white underbase to pop the colors (will just paint the inside of the glass white to avoid this, and do it with white facepaint so it's not permanent):

Re: Practice...

Post by nikkili26 on Mon Apr 07, 2014 3:25 pm

i practice on the job. every couple weeks, my kids or neice will allow me to do 1 quick paint on them, in exchange for a trip somewhere public (walking billboards)....

i don't have enough paint to just practice on myself willy nilly (one day soon, hopefully), so what i do in my spare time is i check out as many designs by other people, i watch THEIR practice sessions and i watch how-to videos...

i watch all day, every day.

then, when the weekend comes and i go to do my next design, my mind remembers all the stuff i saw that i liked, and my hand just naturally does a better job, even without being able to practice between gigs.
