Kryolan Aqua-Proof Underwater Makeup

Post by squiggle on Wed Jan 20, 2010 7:32 pm

Has anyone had any experience with this?

It's extremely humid here in the summers and everyone sweats profusely, so I'm trying to find something to use during the summer festivals that won't sweat off too quickly. This sounds good but since I don't have any experience with it, and it's fairly expensive, I wanted to find out what others thought.

I haven't heard of it or seen it - but I am intrigued. Let us know if you experiment with it.

The person selling it says it will come off with regular make-up remover so I think this would be marketable more to teens and adults than kids. Still not sure... I might buy one color and see what I think of it.

I did see a Kryolan palette that is activated with alcohol instead of water and is waterproof... more to be used with the tattoo stencils I would think. The palette is $50 and more economical, but I could buy one color of the waterproof paint cheaper. Not sure what I want to do!

The Kryolan that uses an alcohol activator is the BIC.....Body Illustration Colors. They are for doing temp tattoos.
I have not heard of the Underwater stuff.....
Who was selling it?
Please let us know how it works if you decide to try it out.
You could also just call or email Joe at Kryolan....he is always eager to help and answer questions about their products.

The Kryolan alcohol activated paint pallette is the BIC(Body Illustration Color) and is supposed to be very good quality alcohol activated paint most popular among us for tattoo painting.

The ink will last anywhere from 2 to 5 days. I have Temptu pallette which is good but I think the industry leans toward the Kryolan which has been around longer. Would not want to use on the face - but fine for arm/leg/torso kind of work. They used a lot of that in the Swimsuit Illustrated painted bathing suits with artist Joanne Gair so the models could get in the water or be misted.

Aqua Proof just looks like the alcohol based liquid makeup for airbrushing.

Air Stream is the water based liquid made for airbrushing. I have some of that and was a tad disappointed - clogged like crazy and was expensive $26 a bottle.

I saw it on ebay and it was Kryolan but there wasn't much more information than than it was waterproof. Now that I've seen the product page, though, I don't think that's what I want to use. And the BIC is to be used on just the body- not the face? The Silly Farm page doesn't give much information, either.

Yes, BIC is for the body. (Although I have heard of some of our menopausal painting sisters -at least one - saying she used it on her face since her facepaint would run during a flash or in extreme heat! Shocked and she liked her painting to look nice throughout the length of her gig. )

Don't bother unless its purely for booked in adults or whatever. If you use it on kids you won't be thanked.

I work in Hong Kong and only use water-removeable paints at shoots, events etc. It all stays fine and if they particularily WANT it to stay good, spray them with a body paint fixer' hairspray (not the face) afterwards.

You can also use No-sweat under the paint in the sweaty areas. But I don't like to as sweating is the way a body prevents overheating/ fainting!

The alcohol activated stuff is temporary tattoo inks - I have some and it takes a LOT of rubbing with the correct removers to get off, and stained badly in some colours. That as a large area of a body/ face would not be fun! I found it way more expensive too, and with limited colours.

Also bear i mind you would need a seperate set of brushes/ kit to use the different paints with - water based stuff mucks up the alcohol and v v.

All alcohol based makeups can be removed with oily makeup remover or even baby oil, but are most easily removed (if applied correctly) with rubbing alcohol.

BIC is alcohol activated cake makeup used for line detail work line hand painted tattoo. Activate with BIC Body Illustrator activator or 99% alcohol.

AquaProof is alcohol based makeup - a while it notes it is waterproof maybe better listed as water resistant - but my personal jury on waterproof is still out until summer. I saw Alison noted a while back it flaked on her - but I tried it last week with great results and have makeup artist report great success using it. It is removed with oily makeup remover or spirit gum remover.

Air Stream is a hybrid meaning it is both water and alcohol based. It is water resistant and yest can be washed off with soap and water. I love this makeup and am very very surprised to read WyndyO post it clogged. Having worked with several top artists who use/have used Air Stream they all love it as it is one of the mos highly micronized, meaning fine particle makeup in the industry. I use it quite often and recommend it to my students based on the fact it does not clog.

Like Cat notes never the two shall meet - don't use the same airbrushes to spray water based then alcohol or a hybrid - it will gum up your airbrush and clog like crazy.
