Volunteered....

Post by PixiePaintrix on Tue May 27, 2014 7:34 pm

and didn't regret it Smile

So here is the story. †A month ago or so I decided to volunteer at a major children's festival. †Thought it would be fun to facepaint and I was told that they supply everything and that the "kits are awesome".

Fast forward to last Thursday when I had my orientation. †The kits had 3 different round brushes and these crayon type paints (that are in a custom made holder so that you can't actually use them as crayons, hard to explain). †

I asked about bringing my own stuff, and after some negotiating it was agreed that I could bring brushes and paint (as long as I clean them their way, and the paint is proper paint :S) †No glitter, no sponges.

So I was totally regretting the whole decision, wanted to back out but felt that it was too late and didn't want to give myself a bad name.

So today I went to paint. †Brought along a sample book of what I could do with only brushes, brought my brushes and a few split cakes. and i |HAD THE BEST TIME! †Wish I was busy doing this full time. †It was fantastic. †The kids I volunteered with were so sweet and had done a bunch of homework so that they also had design ideas and the kids we were painting were so thankful. †

Got to give out a few business cards... but the smiles were worth everything. †This is a very addicting "hobby" †LOL!!

Get to go back on Thursday for one more shift. †Hopefully I start getting bookings soon so that I can keep painting.

I donít even use sponges, I use the $1. cosmetic brushes from dollar general for bases. I do plan to eventually learn how to use sponges (for blender cakes mostly), but sponges are not a MUST.

Yes, it is addicting. Glad it turned out to be a positive experience and hope you get some gigs from it. Great way to get practice!

Good to know that someone that used sponges uses them also. I always wonder if sponging is faster but I have nothing to compare it to.

Sponging is faster and you get a better, smoother base. When I first started to face paint (I was a make-up artist) I started with brushes only too - until I picked up a FP book and realize with the RIGHT kind of sponges you can do so much more and blend and stipple, and edge...

But everyone has their own techniques, whatever works for you.

I like the fact that I had to work on my line work with no sponges, but I'm not going to give them up as a kit staple any time soon Smile

Yes Shannon - the blending part is why I plan to learn the technique eventually. Right now I use starblends for some shading. I have several brand sponges to try until I find my favorite.
