Superstar Neons - alternative pink?

Post by GeordiePainter on Wed Jun 04, 2014 7:42 am

I live in a party city - there's a vibrant nightlife all week through, a lot of student events, paint parties, mashup clubs that kind of thing.

I have contacts among the promoters and organizers at some of the best venues in town and I'm putting together some UV designs to showcase and hopefully get my foot in the door at some of their events.

Anyway, I've bought all of the new Superstar UV fluorescent water-based paints (red, orange, yellow, pink, green and blue), and they have an impressive glow - the blue is gorgeous - under the blacklight. My only issue is with the pink. Oh it glows - but it glows orange! It looks pink in normal light and orange in black light.

I was testing out some of my DFX neon rainbow splits and noticed that my newest split's pink has that orange glow too, but the older split glows up pink!

I already have the DFX UV white and I'm thinking of ordering the DFX pink or magenta to see how these glow under the UV.. I want something that looks pink both in normal light and under the blacklight but I can't seem to find any reviews for these. The magenta and pink are really close in colour so not sure I really need both of them! Hoping someone here can steer me towards a good UV pink..

ETA: I ideally want a waterbased paint, not a grease based paint if possible!

Here is a pic of Superstar Neon yellow base with PINK (yes thats pink) stenciled over the top:

Dear GeordiePainter:
I adore TAG Neon Magenta.
I use it in my rainbow base blenders and one stroke rose cakes. The Neon Magenta is a reddish-pink under the UV lights. I will try to post a picture later on this afternoon.
The Neon Wolfe White is almost clear. It really glows under UV. Be careful, if you drip it on your design, it will glow, even UNDER other colours.

Happy UV Painting!

Thanks fess!

I'll have a look at the TAG paints, sometimes they're hard to get a hold of over here but think my go to shop might have some in.

I've been so focused on searching for specifically UV paints that I might have missed the obvious choices that are listed only as neon lol.

I get you about the white paint! UV painting is a lot more technical than it first appears - the slightest slip can make it come out wrong under the blacklight so I've started painting under the light initially. Then when you turn the light off the paint can look patchy so sometimes needs a touch up! It's a constant learning curve, but I'm loving it!

Sometimes...
UV painting is not about what you paint,
but about what you DON'T UV paint!

I purchased a UV flashlight at a Hallowe'en store, and I bought two UV lightbulbs that fit in a conventional small goose-neck clamp-on lamp from IKEA.  I can paint under the UV bulb at home to practice designs, and I bring the UV flashlight to check designs on the job.  The flashlight is not the best, it is small enough to carry in my kit without adding extra bags and boxes to my load.  I have noticed that UV paints may suddenly change with each new batch of paint, with no explanation or warning.   Keep trying them out as soon as you get them, and compare them with the old colours, so you get a feel for the new colour.

Happy Painting!

I think DF/X has a Neon Magenta colour, too. It is worth the extra investment. I have almost phased Neon Pink out of my kit for the reason that it is too sheer in split cakes or on it's own. Neon Pink turns orange under the UV, and I can use orange... for orange! And, Magenta is awesome!

Sweet! Thanks for the advice Smile I'm definitely steering more to the magenta as it looks like its further from the orange and likely to turn out more pinky! I will post the results once I've tried whichever paint I buy!

We have a winner! I decided to go for the diamond fx Magenta UV

The Superstar pink is the top swatch and the DFX magenta the bottom. As you can see it's a lot 'pinker' under the blacklight. I really need to get my hands on a decent camera though this was taken on my phone.
