Fesspenter! I have a question about your brush set up!

Post by Doe on Thu Jul 10, 2014 10:45 pm

I enjoy having a lot of brushes, too... I'm wondering how you set them up for a gig? What sort of a brush holder are you using? Is it hard to know where to reach to find the exact brush out of 100+ that you want? I feel there must be some piece of organization that I genetically lack. After you have used it and you go through you 6-8 second cleansing process... where do the brushes go?

Yup, I think about that a lot. I use the ice cube tray for water bottles. It holds lots of brushes, but I am not great about knowing where I put each brush when I am done with it. After watching some videos of FABATV, I heard Nick Wolfe say that he is known to bring only one brush. a #3! It made me think that I should downsize!

I stick all my brushes in a small vase (about the size of a water glass)...

I use a florafoam styrofoam disc from the craft store. It cost less then two dollars, and I just stick the handle in the foam. Cheap and effective, and easy to replace if it gets yucky/damaged.

I throw all of mine in a tub with flats on one side and rounds on the other.

I use a double tiered colored pencil holder. I load only the bottom tier with brushes. I sort them by type. Rounds on left, then flats, script liners, petal brushes, starblend swabs, etc. As I use one, I move it to the top tier right above where it is. If you always load it the same way, you'll know exactly where to go and as you paint, you remember if its a brush you already used or not. Best part is when the gig is over, you just close the case and go.

Same for me, FF. I load it consistently the same way like EDJ, and lay it open flat in my case when done...

OK, this may seem a little OC, but it helps my speed to have my brushes where I can grab 'em quickly! The red solo cup is where I swish 1st in water w/Brush Bath, then in more in the water basin before rinsing. the final (3rd compartment) in the basin is plain water, which stays pretty clean for wetting w/new color.
I store brushes in a plastic travel mug from the dollar store w/red solo cup from Costco, which fits snug over the top to protect brushes while transporting. I used to carry 20-30 brushes. This is all I use now.
Using my fav square water/brush basin, I keep my most used brushes on 3 sides. Those are Loew-Cornell #2 & #4...3 each. (for White, Colors & Black) & one #6 round.
You can see The basin in this pic, facing me:
~ #4 Black, alone on Left so I don't get black paint
      all over me.
~ #2 Blk/Wht/Colors in back of basin
~ #4 White & Colors on Right...& #6
On my right, beside the basin, I lay some flat brushes. Everything else stays in the coffee mug, visible in pic w/purple band.

My brushes are in a double pencil easel by Heritage.

When I use a brush, I swish it through the tanks on the left.  The first two have surgical scrub brushes wedged into the bottom.  The first tank has a drop of soap.  The next three tanks contain water.
I have spray painted the first two tank cup black on the outside, to disguise the painty water. The second container is clear... and hard to see here.
I wipe the water out and shape the brush on a towel, and plunge it into a container of 70% alcohol.  I then leave it in a container to dry.  It takes 3-10 minutes for each brush to dry, depending upon how humid it is outside.
As a child is deciding what they would like, I am putting brushes away, and cleaning my kit as I go.  My hands are always messy, so I have to constantly wipe them with baby wipes, and sanitize.  I cut my wipes in half, as that is all I truly use at a time... and it really surprises those parents who reach into my area to grab wipes.

Since I started using paper towels, swipers don't swipe my wipes (or towels) thatns for the tip FF-- & they DO work so much better!! I have been draping a towel/cloth off the handle of my case (saw this on a you-tube, I forget who did it--sorry, but thought it was so smart!)
The pay off was this weekend when doing PPF at $12. I got tipped up to a $20 several times, and it was each time that I squirted & wiped my hands after handling money, before touching the next kiddo. I felt bad that I've not done it conscientiously between kiddos.
