Will this hold me back?

Post by Morninglory on Mon Jul 14, 2014 11:43 am

I have been practicing my lines swirls and teardrops and found I have the most control with a flat brush. I can easily vary my line widths with a simple twist. My teardrops are effortless and I can draw swirls all day long. I can even do double loaded flower petals.

My question is:
Is there a disadvantage to having a flat brush as my go to instead of a round?

Nope! No disadvantage at all.

If that's what creates the effect you want, go for it! Many painters get hung up on what they're "supposed" to do and fail to experiment and find what works best for them. There's something to be said for not reinventing the wheel with some techniques, but flat brushes or filberts (chisel shaped) are often used for tear drops, too.

Thank you, I'm usually one to go with what works but didn't want to hamper myself in the future if the round brush was gong to make a difference.

Brian Wolfe was noted as saying, (and paraphrasing Bruce Lee), "Fear not the painter who practices with 1000 brushes. Fear the painter with one brush and who has practiced 1000 times."

Here's a page of one-stroke techniques all using a flat brush: http://www.painters-online.co.uk/Features/Basic-Techniques-of-One-Stroke-Flower-Petal-Painting/_ft389

I was in a wiser class of lettering, he starting teaching you how to do any trace, line or tear drop with a flat brush, it is so hard, so if you mastered good for you!

Thank you for the Brian quote, Julie. Here is my favorite Brian brush quote. Student "what type of brush should I use"... Brian in a questioning dry wit way..:A pointy one?...

Use whatever works for you.
