SHOW and TELL #9 - July - September 2014

Post by amylady222 on Wed Jul 16, 2014 1:11 am

Hey All!

I noticed one hasn't been started so I thought-why not!?

Totally copied this next part from one of the earlier threads!

This is our Cozy Little Corner down the hall from the Pros ;)where we just post anything we've been working on that we want to share.

Everyone has varying skills, so please don't be shy to post....even if you see someone's painting that look waaaaay too amazing.

It just takes PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. You can even see that if you look at some of the pros and what they posted when they first started in the forum.

HAPPY PAINTING, everyone! (to quote Lisa the Fesspenter Wink )

Yay for show and tell! I just came up with a simple dolphin design today. It isn't anything spectacular, but I am proud of it. I've seen some similar ones, but not the same. Or at least I hope I'm not copying anyone because that certainly was not my intention!

Anyhow, here is me and my design. This is my second time painting on myself, so please forgive my shaky lines and bad tear drops. Painting on oneself vs on another person is difficult!

Despite being proud of my design, I still feel like it needs work. I don't like how I did the dolphin's eyes. Any constructive criticism for the overall painting is much appreciated!

Happy posting and sharing y'all!

Post by MomentumFP on Wed Jul 16, 2014 9:26 pm

ok help! i'm almost tearing my hair out from this. We all agree, the double dip flowers look great and if you do them properly, you can make a bunch on the face or other body part to have a great design.
So i practice on my arm, because my face needs a break. As you can tell, they're no good.

I thought the brush maybe made a difference...i dont think so. The ones in the circle and on the left hand side behind the line are with a royal #3, the other ones are a master stroke #6, both round brushes. I ordered some new paints and i'm waiting for a LC #3 that i hope might make a difference.. :/
for paints I used snaz white and orange (which actually makes me ask - how do you reload the white without it being light orange, or what ever lighter version of your middle colour??)
i'm getting the single colour ok-ish (there's a light orange one and a white one that i like in the million i did)...
but heeeellpp!! Sad Sad As you can see on the left i tried doing individual petals just to see and some are ok, so somehow i cant put 5 together? how stupid is that..

Momentum FP:

Anyone who finds what I say incorrect, please correct me!

Anyway, from what I see in the picture and what you're describing, I feel that you aren't loading the brush right and aren't pressing it down correctly.

Whenever I have too watery of a consistency for my white before I load the brush with the color, I get a muddy mix of color mixed with white, rather than white with just a tip of color. Try using a tad bit less water and load the brush in a back and forth motion.

As for pressing down, usually if I do the consistency correctly first, I push the tip down first and then the rest of the brush. I don't place the entire brush flat all at once.

Although I usually see most face painters use a round brush to do these double dip flowers, I personally like using a La Corneille by Loew Cornelle Flora brush so that it comes out into a perfect petal shape when I press down so it requires a little less effort from me. Plus the sharp tip of the Flora brush loads the color part a lot more nicely in my experience.

As for reloading the brush, I literally have to wash the brush out in my bucket of water and start loading the white again and then the color again Sad I don't know any other way. It's time consuming. If anyone else has a better idea, let us know!

I hope I helped some. Sorry if I didn't! Good luck!

I would use a different white, like DFX, wolfe or cameleon. Load a lot of white onto the brush with a normal amount of water, then drag over the next color which can be quite dry. When laying the brush down drag the tip a little then lay the brush down, makes the center look more defined. I use a lowe cornelle #6, but practice with all your rounds, you may find the best brush for you.

Yeah that's the problem i'm having! because you need water to activate snaz and then i guess it's too much.
i'm waiting on a dfx white from the forum shop.  cheers hoping it'll change my life Wink

thanks everyone! will still give it a shot with what i have this afternoon. I am determined!

This is a yin-yang dragon design using Lisa joy young's line dragon from her dragon mask tutorial. I just added simple wings.

So my boys let me try to do a puppy today. I'm still trying to get the basic designs down that all face painters should know. As always pointers and suggestions to improve are welcome!!

First attempt at a kitty.

Thank you ladies, my last post was with silly farm paints and I am amazed at the difference! I feel like the paint leaves the brush easer. With the snaz there was Sooo much more coaxing and water manipulation, not to mention the constant reloading.

I'm feeling much more confidant in my ability now!Smile

Ok my attempt at a pony. I'm not confidant on the placement of the black and white in the mane. The ears also feel wrong. This was all done with a 3/4 flat and a #6 round. I try to do onestroke where I can.

I love the pony!!! I'm still trying to perfect it. The colours are beautiful. I also have the problem on not knowing where to place the black & white lines in the mane to give detail.
