If you could help a little?

Post by Miss Yoko on Thu Jul 24, 2014 6:37 pm

Hi guys!
those last months I tried to be less online than I was... as a choice...
But then the last 6 weeks have been completely chaotic...

If you have a min to read... if you could help and/or share it will be great!
Thanks so much!

My parents arrived to the USA on June 9th 2014 to visit me.
On June 12th My Dad was extremely exhausted, slept most of the day and when awake was showing signs of confusion.
On the early hours of June 13th, he fell out of his bed and was unresponsive.
We, alarmed, brought him to the nearest emergency room, Advocate Sherman Hospital.
He was then admitted on June 13 in the Critical Care Unit for severe pneumonia. His pneumonia was so critical that he required for him to be on the ventilator for a few weeks, as of today July 23rd 2014 he is still hospitalized in Sherman.
My parents are just simple retired people; they are living on government supported income. Their income is just enough to support themselves. They don't own any properties, or any savings.
They just wanted to visit their family for a couple of weeks. They even contracted some travel insurance to make sure everything will be fine. Unfortunately those little vacations turned into a medical and financial nightmare for them and their family.
Nobody could have expected what happened to them.
As of today the Critical Care bill from Sherman reached the amount of $527 000 ...

After discount (yes, do not ask... i do not get the discount part) and what my parents insurances paid, the amount is still $289 000.

We did apply for charity, not sure that it is going to work.

Beside that my Dad is now stable, out of Critical Care.... he should be transferred to a rehab center but again as they are not insured in the USA... this is not an option.

So, basically Sherman is doing everything they can to get rid of my Dad.

They are pushing and pushing for my parents travel insurance to come get him with an Air Ambulance and then transfer him to France.
This is what is going to happen as far as know sometimes this week. That transfer is covered by the travel insurance.

That doesn't erase the bill though; I cross my fingers for Sherman to accept their Charity application...

My parents just wanted to visit me for a couple of weeks...

Do you have old people? I have a few…
Two of them are more important than the others to me as you can imagine.
You would think that you are prepared as your old people are aging.
You would think you are ready.
No you’re not! Even more… you kind of don’t want to see that they are aging.
Because if they are aging, you are aging too!
We have to love, cherish and understand our old people!
Their body is maybe old and tired but they are still kiddos in their mind!

Do you feel you are the age you are?
No, you don’t!
Same for them!

My daddy is only 75 years old! He already went through a lot in his life!
With good care, he can really recover from that pneumonia.
It is just going to take some time!
When he will be back on his legs, he will have a lot more years to go, more years to spend with his wife, my Mom, more years to spend with his grandchild!

He deserves the same interest than any other cause!
Being old shouldn't mean that your life is over!

The Health American system is completely messed up!
Do you know that if my parents were illegal they will be able to ask for Medicaid?
But they are just visitors... so they have to pay huge bills...
Something is really really wrong...

I'm so sorry to hear all of this, the American healthcare system it's is built upon profits, completely backwards and pathetic. I hope the best for your parents, you and your family. <3 and hugs.

I'm very sorry to hear this Chantal. However, I was told once by a hospital nurse, that if you can't pay your bill there are agencies that will pay it off for you at Medicaid rate, so you should look into that. I don't mean just a discount, I mean just about all of it. Also, if they are on public assistance and have no assets, if it were me I'd go bankrupt or simply not pay it ever, especially since there are no bank accounts or property to lien. Another way (I knew someone who did this) is to pay like $5. per month. Of course the bill will never be payed off, especially at their age, but when they pass, without any assets, nothing will be taken and case closed. Family won't be responsible as long as they got no inheretence from it to lien. I wouldn't pay it, right or wrong. Good luck and I hope your Dad has a good recovery

France socialized medicine sounds like a wonderful option. Think Tina is right on. You can't squeeze blood from a turnip.

I will be praying for you all.

I, too, wanted to add my good thoughts. I am sorry I'm not in a position to help financially - I have my mom living with me and it is very difficult for us. Senior care is not what it should be and medical care is... well, you know.

Just adding my hugs, Chantal. I agree with Tina's assessment.

I had a parking ticket from Canada once, it was stupid, they got!me for parking too far from the curb when the snow was just plowed and a huge snow embankment on the shoulder, basically the!neighbors were bothered that I parked in front of their house and called the cops to complain, and that's all they could get me for. I lived in Washngton state at the time and ignored the ticket on my windshield amd a month later a notice came demanding payment or my license could be suspended. That was 8 years ago and nothing came of it, haven't heard from then since and I even got a license in a different state years later. Don't pay, they can't do nothing about it, they will say whatever they can to try, but really they can't do anything about it.
