Best brush for dots

Post by monelle on Tue Aug 26, 2014 9:04 pm

What is your favorite brush (include size, please) for dots, in terms of springiness, sharpness and longevity? I've had some fairly good luck with Mark Reid, Simply Simmons (Michael's) and Loew Cornell, but I am on a quest for the perfect brush, regardless of cost ... Smile

Loew Cornell #4 round (gold grip) is what I use most often, but I also use Mark Reid #4's, too.

More than the brush is the consistency of the paint. It needs to be thick enough to hold itself together in a perfect circle, like a heavy whipping cream consistency. Too dry and you don't get a circle, too wet and it runs.

i find the best brush is a new one Cool as brushes age, no matter how good, they will become softer, have bristles stick out, and develop "cracks" in the tip, ie the bristles no longer cling together in a point.

also, look for new ones with bristles in good shape when you buy them - tapering smoothly to a fine point. i have seen expensive brushes with bristles sticking out all over the place.

i also prefer a stiffer synthetic brush, but others use softer natural brushes.

in addition to what gildedcat said about the paint consistency, wolfe or the other wax based paints will make cleaner, more opaque dots.

finally, the operator is important (that'd be you).  practice practice practice.

Both are available at the Face Paint Forum Shop (the colourful rectangle at the top of this column).

Thanks, Lisa, I love the Gold Grip #4 too. I am using it more and more. And the FPFS is my favorite place to shop! Smile

For dots depending on the size I use the back of my brushes, I have some generic brushes with plain back, if I need really small dots I use a liner. Smile

I use a bigger brush for smaller dots.
There are tiny "ghost hairs" at the tip of my big brushes that make a small dot possible.
