Post by arose on Tue Sep 23, 2014 8:21 pm

I am not new to Face Painting but feel like it! lol
Originally from the UK and now in Australia. I quailified as a Beauty Therapist and Make up artist in 1998. I have been unable to work due to sickness since 2006, hence the reason while I this is new again (technics anyway). But here I am ready to get going again. Yeah!!!!!!!! Smile

welcome, and i agree that if you are facing a difficult circumstance such as sickness, that's especially the time to treat yourself, including indulging in pastimes you enjoy, if you can.

Hi there!!!

I now have my first Job in Australia. It is a charity event and they have asked for small quick designs only, a paid job for 2 hours at a reduced rate due it being Hospital trust and to raise funds for diabetes. Not really nervous just worried about my shaking, and i know we all shake but this is part of my illness. Lets not forget the meds!!!! Excited though! bounce

sounds like fun, arose!   Very Happy  some ideas to help with the shaking, apologies if you already figured these out Smile

practice designs you can paint with quick strokes, to minimize the time the brush is touching the skin,

use sponges to paint large areas of base colors quickly,

use one stroke cakes, so you don't have to outline as much, or at all,

avoid too many details, just use some well placed accents,

use your pinky to brace against the person's face, like a tripod, to help steady your painting hand.

Glad everything went well! And a second job so soon, that's awesome. I know it can be hard to swallow a free gig but you should see if you can work it to your advantage. This would only be your second gig after your absence, right? So use it as practice. Can you display your business cards at the event? That will help you get paying gigs. Good luck!

So glad you are back! :-)

You can always ask in advance that they help with supply costs at a free gig...and don't forget a tip jar!

(I do a 'free gig' @ a haunt 4 nights a week during October--but my expenses are covered, I get to do actors & play extensively with supplies I normally might not invest in, it provides an opportunity for training others & a free pay per face table if I don't have bookings. This year the venue purchased the compressor of my dreams for me...& leftover supplies come home with me at the end of the season...) It is an intense schedule as I still have to work in the paying gigs, but well worth it in the balance with the practice time, etc. This year I have picked up much experience with airbrushing, I never would have had the time/opportunity/faces a couple of hours a day.

Well I received some feedback from the event i did at the weekend!

I was meant to arrive at the venue at 6.30am (starting Time for me in accordance to the booking!). I arrived at 6.15am but had to be escorted to area. Escorted just after 6.30 and was all set by 7am. There was a constant flow of Children and because they where running late the organizer asked to stay for an extra 30 mins! However it did die down and I packed away at approx 8.50am I the had to wait to be escorted away, and this was about 9.30am

My email from the organizer (quotes as follows)

What time did you start painting – just out of interest?

How many kids do you estimate had their faces painted? I sent a few families down that way during the morning.

Just a bit of feedback for you, some people commented to me that they thought the tent and chair was for sports massages. I realise you’re still setting up the business and a big sign would help with that!

I did reply to this!!!, with the help of my partner a business man(cos I seem to be pushed around a lot) but would like to know how others would?

did you have to be escorted by someone from the organizer, what was the reason for the delay? did the organizer realize you arrived beforehand?

if you would have had time to set up by 6:30, but were delayed by the organizer, that's one thing. if you were delayed because you didn't plan in time to get to your location at the event, that's another.

is the count their way of evaluating whether it's worth having face painting, ie, were people interested in it, or are they asking whether you were able to handle all the requests for face painting?

i would take their comment about your signage and appearance as welcome feedback, you definitely want to know that people can easily recognize you as a face painter.

This was the reply sent to them from an established business man:-

Thank you for your feedback, it has been noted.

In regards to the time spent actually painting, I arrived at the venue at 6:15am and waited for the escort to arrive. Even though I (and other vendors etc) had arrived at this time, it was not until 7:00am that I was actually down on the runway. I would estimate I was setup in my tent by 7:15am, painting commenced shortly after this and was a constant flow until just before 8:50am. During this time I estimate that I painted around 40 faces.

With regards to the signage, I do have a sign order in process. I also still have to decorate the tent with balloons etc.

My massage chair is actually a beauty chair. It sits in an upright position and allows customers to be stable while I paint.
