My new Website! Any thoughts?

Post by JennVenn on Fri Oct 17, 2014 5:19 pm

I finally put together a website I really like!! I am curious to hear what you all think. I have only been face painting professionally for less than a year and this is my first ever website and I keep going back to change it Shocked It is a lot of work! I have enjoyed looking at so many of yours. Thank you again.

It looks great, there is a typo on the types of paints you use in the "about us" section (or maybe it's not a typo), you said you use TAB paints...thought maybe you meant TAG paints??

Other than that, it looks awesome...easy to look around and straight to the point!

nice overall look, good face painting designs, the photo gallery is well done, and the tabs well laid out.

two things jump out at me -
the space within and around paragraphs, seems to be extra here and there, and paragraphs or lists aren't aligned in a similar fashion.

it could use more paragraph breaks in the text, just two or three sentences per paragraph, to make it easier to read.

if you can get the website program to fix the spacing, and put in a few paragraph breaks, i think it would make you look quite professional Smile

I love the "lightness" of it, it seems so happy-- beginning on the home page all the way through. I think that if you switched out your first 2 pictures in the gallery for something stronger, with more of a wow factor---maybe Superman & the parrots--and put the others somewhere in the middle, it may serve you better. Start strong and end strong! (Love your work! Thanks for sharing!)

Under 'About Us'.... there is nothing about you. What’s your name, how did you get into Face Painting and why.

For more information, read the companion article “Good Things to Know Before You Get Face Painted” - where is this companion article? I could not find it.

I saw some typos throughout. Just go on your website and read each line outloud slowly. You will change things around about a million times before you finally just get sick of it, and leave it alone. Lol. That is what I did and now I want to go back and just simplify EVERYTHING, but I know it will take some time, so I haven’t done it yet.

Dear JennVenn:
You have amazing skills as a painter.
There are a very few typos on your website:

Home page
The indentations are not consistent at the beginning of the paragraphs.
The asterisks meant to convey excitement in the first opening headline look like an afterthought, or a footnote. If you feel you need something to pull the eye to your sentence, a decorative element instead of the asterisks may serve you better in an artistic manner.
Spacing. The spaces between letters in the words is called 'kerning'. If your program has the capability... tighten the spaces inside the words, so each word is read as a whole, instead of individual letters.
There should be a double space after a period and the next new sentence.

Rates and Service
insert a space between the words 'area' and 'in' for your request for a sheltered areain a shady.
I would remove the sentence regarding what you will do when you do not show up to their event. It sets up the idea that you may not show up, and it happens so frequently that you have to put that out on the website. I would save that for an actual, individual contract.

Happy Painting!

Thank you all so much! I appreciate all the pointers. I am sooo not technical at all Shocked Thank you for the compliments too. I am going to try to go into today and adjust the paragraphs and try to make it more cohesive. Anyone use Weebly drag and drop? I am not sure how to change the fonts within a paragraph and how to make them have correct spacing.
Eviedejesus- yes there should be a document linked up to the button that has info about safe paints and practices. I will try to fix that. Oh and I totally forgot to include something about myself. I was so concerned getting all the info down I forgot. Thanks. I will add that.
Fesspenter- thank you for the spell check too. I will try to make the questions in the beginning look more purposeful and less like footnotes Smile I will also remove the plan in case I don't show up. Definitely don't want the client worried if I'll be there.
Jirile- I will adjust the paragraphs for a better flow Smile I will post when I have done so to see what you think. Thank you for your kind words too.
anniel- Thank you too. I think you meant the frozen picture on the home page with the superman and then the last picture where I have minnie mouse. I can switch those out Smile
I am excited to see how it turns out! You all rock

hey jennvenn, the home page looks better, and your additional info is great. the photo slideshow is great, too, forgot to mention that before. cheers  flower

i'm gonna play "english major" and point out some things that need to or could be changed, don't be discouraged, to write things online is to be proficient in typos, and wrestle with website spacing (been there, done that!) Wink

p.s. i've found it useful to type stuff in a regular word document on a computer, or note on a cell phone, do spelling & grammar check, then copy and paste into the website or online.

"face paint gallery" page -
love the arrangement of photos and being able to click on each to see larger.
suggest making the text bold or the same size font as other pages, so it looks darker like the other pages.

"rates and services" page -
do a hard "return" at the end of the each line after "faces)" and "guests)" so the .... appear on the line below.
if you just do a space, it wraps around like it's doing now and looks confusing.
the text on adverse weather needs to be pulled together into longer groups of words.  again, use a hard "return" to get groups of words on separate lines.
or you might consider changing all the text on this page to left justification, the centered text is somewhat difficult to read.

"about us" page - several typos, suggested changes in grammar
priviledged > privileged
never > I never
being smiles > bring smiles
produces > products
to bring to joy > to bring joy
skin, eye, and lips > skin, eyes, and lips
participants > participant's

on all pages -
i would still suggest adding more paragraph breaks, to break the text up into smaller chunks, which makes them easier to read, especially in the "about me section"

Thank you jlirie! You are so thorough and I appreciate all your advice. I had my brother in law who helps design websites look it over and he tweeked and adjusted it. I really love the way it came out. He adjusted the spacing on the paragraphs. I was typing and spacing them like an essay! Oops tongue Learning so much today.
