Did my first big gig!

Post by LittleMonsters on Sun Dec 07, 2014 5:59 pm

So I've face painted with the cheap cream face paint over the past 10-15 years on the rare occasion; I started out volunteering and organizing the children's section for a yearly fundraiser event for a local children's hospital getting volunteer face painters but had to step in to cover breaks and did the odd party or volunteer opportunity.

However, 6 months ago I finally made the decision to do face painting on the side and ordered my first professional supplies.  But my full-time job has been all consuming so I haven't really pushed my "business" and have only done a few parties to date.

On Monday I got an e-mail to do face painting for an event from 10am-1pm on the Saturday (was surprised to get one because I stopped advertising).  I told the lady I was available and gave her my hourly rate without the discount and she was content.  I was hesitant to do this because I've been pretty sick the past 3 weeks, starting with the flu, then pneumonia, and some ever evolving symptoms that are just annoying and weird... but it sounded like she was in a bind and I felt like I should be getting better (wrong!!) and I needed the money from missing 2 weeks of work so on the Thursday the deal was done.  And then I found out there would be 160+ children, lol!

So when I get there, I was told there would be another face painter (and I was all "Hallelujah!") and the event would have a person working the line (which I assumed would then also close the line ~1pm).  Well neither happened, and people were waiting up to an hour to be painted, so I painted for 4 and a half straight hours!  Finished my last face at 2:25pm.  The one that hired me left early so we have some talking to do, lol...

I was surprised I was able to do this since I've been feeling so bad but I do find when I'm face painting and once I get going nothing else matters and I'm in the zone so to say, haha... because I can paint for hours and not realize it.  But coming on the end, my hands were ohhh so shaky!

A simple snowman design was the most requested of all... did some candy canes, a Christmas tree, frozen crowns, some butterflies, some skulls, some tigers, some cats, a dog, some lions, and that's all I can remember... my memory has also been bad... unfortunately I was so busy I only got one picture... of my setup... lame...

Sorry about the long post if anyone reads it!! ^_^

Nice set up, Little Monsters!
My hands get shaky when I need to eat.
It is better to schedule several short breaks, than to get to the point of fatigue and dehydration.

At the CNE, we set an alarm that goes off every half an hour, to remind us to drink water. At the end of the eight hour day, we are tired, and we have much more energy than we did the first two days, dehydrated.

My team and I know about being "in the Zone". We love it! Yet, we know we cannot sustain that feeling without taking care of ourselves.

Happy Painting!

A timer... that's a really good idea... that I would need and could use! Great tip, thank you! Smile

I'm still looking for a nice case to house my supplies so that I at least look more professional when I'm painting instead of just laying everything out on a table like the above.

I just set alarms on my iPhone.
I chose the "Duck" sound.
When the Duck quacks..
we must drink.

Your set up DOES look professional.
If you place your supplies in a case, you then must remove it when you get there. I am going to aim to attend the Halton Jam in January. You should join!

Happy Painting!

Oh congratulations Little Monsters! Sounds like you did a fabulous job!!! Very Happy Love your set up.. so neat and tidy and colourful! I hope you get better soon too! I know how you feel.. I had a 4 hour job at a Family Fun Day recently... I actually started to feel ill while I was painting and felt absolutely lousy at the end.. I just hope none of the little ones caught the awful flu which flattened me for the few days afterwards!!

And yes, it's so hard and so tiring when you have a full time job as well isn't it!! 18 more months and I can retire from my job and enjoy my face painting much more I'm sure!!!

Wish I'd seen your alarm tip Lisa before this last weekend... I had a four hour job on Saturday and a 5 hour one on Sunday... both days I had big queues and didn't drink or eat and was very wobbly at the end! Will be setting the alarm on my phone next time for sure!!! Very Happy Thanks!

Our Duck Alarm can be heard by our line up, too! Occasionally, a parent will pick up on our happy cries of "That's the Duck Alarm... everybody drink water!" and the parent will encourage their child to drink along with us, too.
I wonder if we are contributing to the delinquency of minors by involving children in a drinking game?

Happy Painting!

the duck alarm sounds hilarious, and a good way to let people know you need rehydrating/sustenance. i'd even use it for a snack break.

Just thinking of this makes me giggle... after the alarm tip, I feel like we should have an entire thread dedicated to random tips where each post is one single random tip for face painting.

Do not bite your toe nails while face painting.

don't provoke her.. lol!

however, there may be face painters who can paint with their feet. just don't let them hold the top of your head still while they do it.

You mean I have to stop biting my toenails while face painting? And I thought that was why my line was so popular! You think they'll still line up for the tigers and butterflies??? bounce

So Little Monsters - Did the lady ever pay you for staying almost an hour and a half past the hired time? Did she say why the other painter and line manager never showed up?

Fess, that's so funny! When I used to teach preschool my ducky timer was for potty training, I would say "do you hear the quack quack?" Since then I've got a life and no longer rejoice in the potty behavior of two year olds.

I sent her an e-mail today asking what her plans for payment were and she apologized and said she must have hit save instead of send. She also asked for a revised invoice (4 hours instead of 3) so I was happy with that.

She also said, "We have heard so many wonderful comments about your work and just wanted to say thank you for joining us on such short notice!!!!"
