First Doggies

Post by Ash_A on Fri Feb 06, 2015 5:43 pm

Hello, Painty-friends!

I just wanted to share a bit of my progress. I've just passed my one week face painting mark and I am absolutely loving the challenge and my practice time so far!

Here are my first two doggies!

The first is just a generic pup (2-3), I guess, and the second is more specifically a Sheltie (2-6).

As always any tips, tricks, advice is more than welcome as I love to soak up all of your wonderful knowledge and try my best to put it into action!
Blessings,
Ashlie

good start, the ears and forehead on the 1st pup are really good, nice shading, too. i think i'd prefer the nose and muzzle to match your own nose and upper lip, like the sheltie, which looks good!

the muzzle on the 1st pup looks a bit unnatural, maybe make it less round, put the dots in a couple lines, and just outline the lower part of the muzzle, don't connect to the nose.

Thanks for the feedback, Jlirie.

I wasn't super happy with my muzzle in the first one. Felt like it sort of was missing something, but was just playing around with placement. (Also trying to stay away from the lip area as much as possible since I'm trying to find a go-to doggy design for kids.)

I'll keep working on them!

hmm, maybe a design without a white muzzle? just white or light brown outlines from the corner of the mouth?

or spots instead? i love this snazaroo design that uses spots on bare skin, no base. you could leave out the black outline of the lips, or do white outline from the corners of the mouth.

I like the shading on the first one in the ears. The 2nd i feel needs more blending work. What brand are you using? Are you using glycerin based paints or wax based? it looks like glycerin as it's a bit more transparent.

The biggest question would be 'how long does it take to do that on a kid?' I find I end up having to tone down or find time saving tricks to speed up some of my more time consuming designs when i'm 'out in the field'.

I use TAG and Wolfe black and white.

I doubt I'd offer a Sheltie to a kid. I just did it on me because I happen to own one. I love you

I'm still looking for a quick generic pup design.

ahh ok. Some reason it seemed a little less opaque looking.

Oh yeah totally I paint stuff in practice I wouldn't really paint on kids for various reasons.

As for a quick generic puppy, I got just the thing!

Love that's it's a dalmatian too. Short haired breed so no need for lots of fur detail, but you can add detail is spots! Also it's instantly recognizable as a dog, and not another other further creature.

(Pet Peeve: I hate it when I'm painting and the parent or other bystander goes "oh look it's a ____" when that's not what you are painting. Makes the kid think you might be doing it wrong too.)

Cute! What about an option that doesn't include lips???

Just a little more of a challenge....

(My kids cannot keep from licking their lips and I know mine must not be the only ones...right?)

Suppose you could always modify it to be like Daisy Designs cats, being just to the nose.
