Face painting is "Annoying and Ugly"

Post by Forest-Fairy on Thu Feb 19, 2015 1:18 am

So I love watching The Young Turks on youtube. Been watching since 2009 and they are my favorite online news source.

They posted a video today where one of their hosts made a comment that made me go "oh really? Is that so?".

Link: http://youtu.be/aRcaz_HmXDw?t=2m30s

Ana of The Young Turks wrote:"Kids like to color... and paint their faces, which I never really understood. When I have kids I really hope they don't want me to paint their faces. It's annoying, and it's ugly, and they need to get over it. okay?"

I know it's pretty trivial, but this reminded me of a topic being discussed in this thread, about the ignorance and over all stigma that face painting gets.

I think "Really Ana? You've never seen any good face painting that wasn't ugly?"

While I know it sounds trivial, I wrote them a short letter.

Me wrote:Hello! Loyal fan from Canada here, been following you guys with my main account since 2009, and I love what you do. But I wanted to address something in one of your videos http://youtu.be/aRcaz_HmXDw?t=2m50s
At 2:50 to 3:00 min in, Ana says that face painting is 'annoying and ugly and they [kids] need to get over it'.

This really hurt because I'm actually a professional face painter in Vancouver Canada. I can assure you that my work at least, is not ugly. https://www.facebook.com/LookingGlassPainting/photos/a.336773263040627.106826.336748469709773/905614836156464/?type=1&source=11

I know there are a lot of bad face painters out there, I have seen them first hand. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8tADuPmvf5c/VOBzdvDOs5I/AAAAAAAAAqM/YaNShKGNdEI/s1600/Ready.Set.jpg

I know how trivial this sounds, but please don't lump sum all face painters into one pile, there are professionals out there. My job is to let kids express themselves, I bring smiles and turn little kids into Spiderman for a few hours. It's magical and is really special to them. Thank you for reading. Keep up the good work you guys do.

Let no one say I'm not passionate about what I do. Wink

I doubt I'll get a reply, as I'm sure they get tons of troll mail every day, and after all it's only 'face painting' so I doubt it will be taken seriously. *rolls eyes*

But some part of me hopes they will click on those links and see what can be done with the medium, and I also encourage others to send Ana photos of your best work! lol

oh that's a good idea Kal!
Doing that right now and re-sending an altered version of my message.

Had to send this from my personal account as 'private messages' it didn't seem to be an option with my fan page account.

You said that face painting is 'annoying and ugly and they [kids] need to get over it'.

This really hurt because I'm actually a professional face painter in Vancouver Canada. I also feel bad because you have never gotten to see face painting that is actually good. Sad

I know there are a lot of bad face painters out there, I have seen them first hand. Professional face painters like myself face this kind of 'bad face painting' stigma all the time, even though we try to show that it can be real art! Which is why it felt bad to see an online personality that I admire bash it. Sad

I know how trivial this sounds, but please don't lump sum all face painters into one ugly pile, there are real professionals out there.

You said you 'didn't understand' face painting; well it's all about self expression, as with any makeup, only with more imagination! Very Happy

My job is to let kids express themselves. I bring smiles and turn little kids into Tigers, Butterflies and Spiderman for a few hours. It's magical and is really special to them.

Here is my facebook face painting page

Please enjoy! I have also invited some of my face painting friends to send you photos of their amazing work to show you that face painting isn't all ugly. ^.^ *hugs*

Thank you for reading. Keep up the good work!

P.S. Don't listen to the haters. You ROCK!

Here is her facebook page!

I invite you all to politely send her photos of your best and gorgeous work!

She really is a nice lady and a good host, so please be polite. *hugs*

Help Ana see that not all face painting is ugly! Very Happy

lol Kal Razz

A how to? Durrrrrr. Maybe, I suppose I could do a step by step on my ProFace head. But I really want to get into making videos to help boost my website search rankings.

I'll see if I can steal my neighbors kid and set something up. Smile

Oh, yes.
I cannot remember what I wrote.
I quoted her, and told her that she had probably not seen really great face painting, and talked about the 'art of transformation', and the child's reaction when they look in the mirror.
At the end of the message, I said, "Please feel free to contact me at any time, should you have any questions".
So....
here I am,
waiting by the phone.
