Permanent face paint, oh dear!

Post by sarahw on Mon Mar 02, 2015 6:15 pm

I run craft activities and face paint for kids at my retail job once a week, and I've been doing it for a year and a half. I use TAG and FPA in the work kit. This weekend, I had a mum bring her kid to be painted, and while I was doing so, she told me that the last time they visited he'd had a ninja turtle, and that the colour had been permanent. I was like, what?!?

She said the colour stayed on his face for five weeks. She only left it on him for an hour and washed it off with soap and water. It seemed like she'd done the right thing, so I was baffled. As an aside, none of my other exceedingly regular customers have ever had a complaint like this, nor had green faces when I saw them a week later. I apologised and assured her that her red and blue spidey kid wouldn't have a permanent face paint this time.

Afterwards I thought about the info she gave me, and she'd mentioned she'd tried all kinds of things to get it off, including makeup remover.

I think she may not have realised that staining is normal for a couple of days, and tried a few products to get it off, one or more of which might have set the stain, instead of just letting it fade on its own. Is that a possibility? Have any of you ever had this problem?

Regardless, I think it's high time I got removal instructions printed out.

I test things out on my own skin... and the drier my skin... the more it stains.
I have never had anything last more than four days on my skin.
My cleaning instructions on the back of my business card instruct the parent to use a soap that does not irritate the eyes (baby shampoo or Cetaphil), and lather up, without water, let it sit for a minute or two.... then rinse. If there is still a residue of paint, some coconut oil, or olive oil should remove the rest.
Our skin sheds all the time. I cannot imagine the face paint stain staying for very long. If you want a henna design... it does not last more than a few weeks.
But... FIVE WEEKS???!!!
Seriously?
Is this the same mother who complained that she had been waiting in my long line up for over two hours (and I had only been set up to paint for 25 minutes).
You will find other, more succinct instructions from our members.
There is not one right way to remove face paint.

Yep, seriously. I think there might have been a few omissions (and/or exaggerations) in that story. Hopefully she doesn't come back next weekend and say the same thing! Shocked

It's possible we have the same culprit, because she told me that my kit at Christmas was completely different, but it's been the same kit for over a year...

The instructions I give parents when they ask are pretty similar, I say rinse it off with water and soap if you like, and that most types of oil will take off the residue if they're worried about the staining, but that it will fade on its own.

FPA is Face Paints Australia, they're made by the Looney Bin here in Melbourne Smile I only have a couple of those paints though, and I think the greens are all TAG.

My instructions state that soap should be used before water. If activate the paint with water, just like I do to face paint, you may cause staining.

I adore TAG Pearl Green.
Makes the BEST Green Lantern.
And,
it stains like stink!
Not for five weeks, though.

My son had a ninja turtle yesterday... left it on all day, and then we wash it off with soap and water... no staining and that's with TAG

I'm sure if you saw her next week and asked her again how long it stained she would probably say for 6, got to exaggerate to make the message hit home. Different skin types also stain differently and it also makes a different if the skin was cleaned beforehand or if they used moisturizers (which for body paint I tell my models no moisturizers the day of). I don't worry about staining, I have even worked a stain into my face with wipes and then used proper removal methods of soap and water afterwards to which the left over color was minimal, then add the oil trick and wait a little while and comes clean every time.

To the mom using the word 'permanent'

5 weeks? I call bull. The epidermis sheds WAY faster then that, and it was only a topical application.

I have super sensitive skin, and makeup remover ALWAYS gets rid of any stains I have. Again her version of events sounds fishy.

With her gross misuse of the word 'permanent', and 'obvious lie is obvious' about it being there for 5 weeks - she's totally exaggerating, probably for attention, and something to talk about.

My brother does sh!t like this all the time, lying just for the heck of it, and to have something to say. Growing up with him, I learned what BS smells like, and this lady reeks of it.

Either way, having removal instructions on the back of your card is a good way to go. It also doubles as an excuse to give your card to parents! Wink

EXACTLY!

That's the biggest piece of evidence that tells me it's bullshit.

If i had a kid that was stained for 5 weeks by face paint, I wouldn't be doing it AGAIN! lol

Well, I saw the kid at work a couple of days after he had his spidey, and, tada, no stains!

Thanks for the reassurance on the impossibility of a five week stain. It was very strange she came back after the staining, but I'm glad she did because her kid is lovely.

Well, wherever the fibs came from, she didn't seem overly worked up about it, so maybe it's just a habit of hers. Hopefully I'll see them round more often and can suss her out a little more, because I'd like her to be waxing lyrical to her friends about how wonderful her kid looks as spidey, not how he has a permanently green face!

i think you are right that it's just a habit. Again it's not something some one who lies like that would want to cause a scene over, it's more just to have something to talk about to make their lives seem more interesting.

Was it for sure your face paint the first time? Maybe she went to a painter that made their own paint with food coloring instead. But even then it wouldn't have stained that long.
