Large or small blending cakes, which do you prefer??
With the great sale going on in the forum shop, I have decided to go ahead and order a rainbow blending cake; however, I am unsure of which size to get. What are your experiences with both the 10gm and the 50gm cakes, and which do you guys recommend?
Re: Large or small blending cakes, which do you prefer??
Having used both, I like the Neon 50 gram the best. Quickest application of the most colors. But I do like the minis a lot with the butterfly brushes.

Re: Large or small blending cakes, which do you prefer??
Thanks! What's the difference between the neon 50gm cakes and the regular 50gm ones? Also, do you have any pictures that I could see of them in use?
Re: Large or small blending cakes, which do you prefer??
I'd go with the larger ones first too.
The minis are perfect if you want to try the one-stroke techniques (a-la Donna Dewberry). But, I still used the larger cakes with a 1" brush and did great one-stroke flower petals and swirls (with fewer colors, of course).
With the larger cakes you can also sponge a whole rainbow at once, big bang, zero effort. I could only find a couple of pics of mine in action. This was the pastel rainbow. (FYI: my tent is red and casts a red glow on everything!)
Oh, and you can make your own, too, if you're willing to cut into your cakes. My kit is now bare bones, so I didn't want to cut chunks into mine anymore.

hummm - I would get one of each! lol
I like the larger ones for butterflies and full face designs - but the small true rainbow I get ALOT of use out of.... couldn't live without either of them

Would there be a video of the mini rainbow in action???? Oooh, do you take requests?
Re: Large or small blending cakes, which do you prefer??
I think that I am just going to go with the mini rainbow, but I am not sure whether to get neon or regular. I don't really need the big one yet because the only time I need the rainbow is to do an actual rainbow in a few of my designs. I think that the big one would be too large for that.
Re: Large or small blending cakes, which do you prefer??
If im given a choice between regular and neon, i'll choose neon for a bigger bang for your buck. Kids love it, it makes outstanding flower petals, rainbows and even animals (just paint a white snaz unicorn over a rainbow background and see the magic) and other people notice the bright colors from a greater distance, hense a free advertizement that you are at this location and an active face painter. The neon can really bring out the "wow" factor. Anymore i never travel without them. But most important is to have fun doing it too, if you don't like neon, then you will never paint at your best.

PJ,
I think you would be surprised what you other designs you can make with the rainbow cakes, rainbow tiger, rainbow cat, rainbow butterfy. I have even done a rainbow horse. You just used the rainbow in lieu of the traditional colors making sure to pat them in and not muddy the colors.
This one was done with the 50 gram sunshine:

I use the large neon rainbow for the super fast tiger, mask or butterfly designs. Great for long line ups yet satisfying for the client.

The mini ones are better for making actual rainbows...

Thanks Guys!! I went ahead and ordered a small neon rainbow cake today just to try it out. Since I am only going to use it for actual rainbows for now. After I get used to it and get some more work lined up, I will probably order a bigger one.
Re: Large or small blending cakes, which do you prefer??
I say get one of each in each color family (one to use and one to treasure like Golem). I'll never admit how many DFX mini's I've accumulated but I'll admit to having 3 50g cakes.
Re: Large or small blending cakes, which do you prefer??
As said - I mae both - minis for butterfly brush etc, biggies for all others
