Is t more cost effective to purchase split cakes or to make them?

Post by queencordial on Sun Apr 26, 2015 8:04 pm

I'm new to face painting, and I want to practice with split cakes. Is it more cost effective to purchase them pre-made or to make them yourself? If you include buying the containers, too. Thank you so much!! Xoxo

It's cheaper to make them... I made a thread some time ago where I planned what I wanted and ordered accordingly.

I don't think the numbers I gave are accurate as I was left with extra paint in the mock-up and I don't remember if I included that or not...

Overall... if we look at TAG, a 1-stroke cake (30g) being ~$11 each, a Rainbow cake (50g) being ~$13-14 each and single colored cakes (50g) being ~$11-13 each.  The 30g containers cost $1.50 each and 50g containers are $1.75 each.

You can see that you save the most by making your own 1-stroke cakes - basically you can either buy 30g of paint or 50g of paint for the same price but some added work on your behalf.

Thank you, LM! I'll have to save up to buy multiple colors to make the cakes Smile

if cost is an issue for the time being, you could also buy a smaller pallete and mix and match the colors into small split cakes or one strokes.

I remember working this out when I first started my kit and for the one strokes at least, the difference was marginal. If you work in the time used to make them, it isn't worth it in monetary value.

They are, however, good fun to make and give you the opportunity to customise your product and play with colours.

I only make them when I want to customize a cake that's not available or available in the paints you like.

You should be making a large profit off of a one-stroke cake (two designs and it's paid for and you've still got another 40 waiting to be made)...restaurants only make about 7-15% profit, grocery stores about 3-5%...I feel great about my rainbows and one-strokes. They are my friends.

With work involved it's about the same. However I did factor that it's cheaper to buy the 90gm colors where you can and refill your empty cakes as they get worn down. Wink

I also use the dregs of near empty cakes to refill one strokes and base blenders. I rarely have to buy brand new one strokes or base blenders this way.
