Balancing time between kids with hygiene?

Post by mustangemi on Fri Aug 14, 2015 11:57 pm

Hey ladies and guys!

So I've done about eight or nine small local events so far and I think i'm learning how to make my designs better and better with each outing - but my question is a bit more technical.

I work in healthcare and my degree is in biology, so the sanitation of my supplies and keeping things germ-free is very important to me, I don't want any kids getting rashes or catching the snotties from someone else because of me. But it's nearly impossible to completely clean all of my brushes and sponges between kids, so anyone have some tips on how to find that balance between hygiene and time? So far I've settled on a system of having at least three of each type of brush I use the most (my flats and my round 6s, etc), and a bunch of sponges, so that I can have a mass-wash after a few kids and cut down on non-painting time.

Better ideas?

The best method I have found so far to clean and sanitize quickly is my home made "brush cleaner." LOL. I drilled a small hole in the cap of a pop bottle which my brush handle fits snugly in with the bristles down in the bottle. Then I shake he11 out of it, wala. clean sanitized brush in one easy step. I fill the pop bottle with 70% alcohol and a drop of dish soap. For gods sake....don't use more than a drop of soap...LMAO. It was quite the fantastic mess.

I work under the most draconian health regs specifically writtenfor face painting that we know of in Alberta.

My system is (I use a three compartment water tub for clean water, and a separate container for alcohol):

 Wipe off excess face paint with a tissue or wipe (I usually have one in my hand.)
 If the brush is loaded with black I will often swish in the dirty sponge bucket to get most of the paint out first.
 Stroke the wet brush across the bar of Ivory soap.
 Submerge the brush back in the largest compartment of the water tub and rub on the ridges on the bottom to work out the paint.
 Then rinse in the second compartment.
 Then rinse in the third compartment.
 Then saturate in my container (a small plastic pot) of 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) by submerging the loofe and swishing to make sure all the hair has been completely soaked.
 Then I stand the brush up in the holes on the edge of the water tub to completely air dry before I use it again.

At the end of the job, Iíll wash all the brushes I used again and lay them down to dry as I finish packing up. They dry quickly due to the alcoholís evaporation rate.

I wash the brushes after EACH use. Only takes a few seconds really.

And they are properly washed again at home with brush soap and air dried.
