Okay, gotta vent - charity event!

Post by mhiltdesigns on Sat Sep 26, 2015 7:41 pm

I just spent 6 hours painting at a charity open house.  I'd put out a tip bucket, and jammed, non-stop painting.  My bucket was pretty full.  While I was packing up, the director came by and emptied out my bucket!  She handed me $25, thanked me, and walked away.  I was so stunned, I didn't know what to say.  Is that how it normally goes - should all the money go to the charity?  Should I have said anything?  In the past, I've split the money with a charity.  Well, at least I got paint money.

Terms are usually discussed/arranged in advance. Even if you are volunteering your services you need an agreement/contract to make sure everyone understands what the terms are.

If you did not have an agreement in advance, OR if it was YOUR tip jar, then she was out-of-line, completely.

If they provided the tip jar and activities were to be paid for by tips, then that would be what happens.

I don't accept tips (I will refuse them) unless I have discussed it with the ones who have hired me prior to.

What you described sounds very rude... but another reason why questions need to be asked in advance so we don't run into these problems or be disappointed with the amount of time and effort we have put into an event.

Oh goodness, no.
But I don't do charity events without having all the money details ironed out in advance.
I definitely would have stopped her when her hand hit my tip jar.
"Excuse me, what are you doing??"
Usually I agree to a percent of my profit, after an agreed amount for a materials fee.
Some venues use a ticket system, some let me work on an honor system.

I would email her & ask sweetly how much you "donated" and for a receipt for your taxes.

You guys are so professional and calm and collected. I smack the fingers of anyone who reaches for my tip jar without a contribution in their hand.

Greedy Grabber: "OMG You smacked my hand."

Me: "Because your mother forgot to."

IMO: That organizer never should have put her hands on YOUR tip jar even if there was an agreement made. Your tip jar is part of your show from start to finish. That includes end of the event collection. Your tip jar, your business, and your decision on how much "overhead/charity" you contribute.

While it's too late to do anything about it now, you know for the future. All of us need to keep our tools, money, and other personal effects within our own reach. If your kit is so big that this is impossible, then find a way to condense it. If this sounds unreasonable then remember this formula... wingspan = same as height. I'm 5'7". Not being able to fit all of my stuff in an almost 6 foot space would be excessive.

Thanks everyone for all the input! Lesson learned, I guess. I'll be sure to specify up front next time.

I do like the idea of contacting her and asking "soooo, how much did I donate?" Twisted Evil

what everyone else said. but.. if you didn't have anything in writing, then the director didn't either. which means she didn't have anything saying she could have all your tips. so she basically stole money from you.

i would contact the charity and tell them you want to negotiate the terms after the fact, and you want some of the money back. $25 for 6 hours of hard work is ridiculous.

I if was your tip jar, she shouldn't touch it, usually I give 10% to 20% of what I make, if they pay me to be there I hand the bucket to them, but even though they never take it.

wow! were you NOT paid to be there?, or did they pay you an hourly rate? Even if they did, those things need to be discussed before the event.
