Hygiene - Question about using soap bars

Post by AnnaBB on Mon Jan 18, 2016 12:18 am

Hey guys,

I'm pretty new to being a paid face painter so I'm still experimenting with the best and easiest ways to keep things clean.
I have read that a few of you use soap bars to clean brushes in between uses. Are these just normal soap bars (the soap bars mentioned are from the US so I'm not familiar with them). What do you keep them in when your using them? What are the pro's and con's of using soap bars?

Thanks in advance!

I use a bar of Ivory Soap.  It is regular bar soap - pure soap, unscented.  I keep it in a plastic soap dish with a lid.

First is a photo of my soap/dish while working.

Second is the package of soap.

As to pros and cons... I have to wash and sanitize my brushes while working so there aren't a lot of alternatives that work. Commercial brush cleaning products just don't work adequately to remove the pigment (they are designed more for oil based products). Soap cleans the brushes, then they are rinsed and then sanitized with 70% isopropyl alcohol and allowed to dry before reuse.

Hi Shannon

Thanks so much for your reply! I think I may give the soap idea a try.
I use 70% alcohol on my brushes also, when I've returned from a job. I always take it with me incase I have a situation that I feel i need to use it. I found that it doesn't dry in time for me to use the brush for the next child. Do you have lots of the same size brushes?

Yes, I have multiples of the brushes I like. Usually a total of about 40.

Bar of Soap

Post by Milshepp on Wed Jan 20, 2016 6:46 pm

Liquid soap or dish washing liquid is the best practice to use when cleaning paint brushes and makeup sponges. A bar of soap harvests and promote too many types of pathogens that can results in a skin rashes and other infections.

After the bar soap they are rinsed and saturated with alcohol.  This is per the health regulations I have to follow. As far as we know Alberta, Canada is the only jurisdiction with actual regulations for face painting.  Here is the link.
