It is tough to get this process down for sure. Check out a few of Silly Heather's Youtube video's. She gives some insight into the loading process.

I would also suggest another would be to google "one stroke by Donna Dewberry" She is on youtube as well. Also the Arty Brush vid. is good at Silly Farm. Kinda low-tech, but for $25 it is good.

She has other's even one that Rebecca was in it, but you can search.

Have fun and hope this helps!

I love that split cake Kristal, I would have never thought of putting those colors together- and it IS nice not to have to use ink and purple all of the time!!! lol

Isn't it though?! Haha. The only reason I put them together - I bought some gems, and they were in the same colour order. I figured I had to Razz Fun because you can always use just blue/white or pink/white, too.

You could almost use it for a pastel flag. That will get me thinking.

Melissa- for the large cakes, I don't spritz my split cakes I dunk the sponge in water first and saturate it completely and squeeze out any excess (to prevent drips) this usually leaves the sponge wet enough for me to wet the cake AND load my sponge all at once. I basically just press, press, press, press. As I'm doing that it wets the cake AND loads the sponge. If you don't press enough it might be drippy so you need to make sure you work it into the paint a bit until the consistency is just right, (hope that makes sense)

for the tiny arty cakes I use a big 1" wide brush. but I haven't really mastered it yt. I also use small squares of sponge cut to fit that little square.

I find that if i dip my brush and go to load and it's too dry you can touch the tip of the brush into the water again and reload. You do have to be carefull about to much water. I have to say I got three arty cakes to try out and I've just reached the bottom on two of them and I still haven't mastered the loading yet. I find the arty cake holders too small and I have to hold it in one hand while I'm loading it. Very frustrating to have to keep picking it up for another load! So I don't know if I'm going to replace them yet. My husband keeps offering to buy me the whole splitcake/ rainbow pallet from silly farm, I haven't taken him up on this yet because there were other things I needed to get first, and I'm tempted to use this money for advertising instead of more paint.
Anyway I know you've seen this pic already but the whole thing was done with a purple/red/pink/gold/white arty cake (sorry forgotten what is was called) and the 'leaves' artycake.
Thought it might help.
cheers.

I am a big fan of the split cakes big and small. I currently use the "Arty" (15) and (3) DFX minis and the larger DFX(2) and (6) sillyfarm rainbow split cakes. Big "WOW" with little effort once you have got the loading technique down. People always ooh and ahh when they see the results, and are like how'd you do that.

I like just using a sponge w/ the arty cakes & pressing the colors in. I'm getting better w/ them w/ the brush. I love the 50 gm ones Metina sells. I also think the arty cakes are just too small.

Re: Rainbow, arty & split cakes?

Post by ChangingFaceDesigns on Fri Apr 23, 2010 2:51 am

Well I finally caved in at 2:00 a.m. this (Fri.) morning and decided to see what all the hub bub was about making your own split cakes. Soooo as I have said in my other posts on this subject, I was wayyyyyyy to chicken to even think about cutting up my paints. So what did I do you ask???? I raided the Snaz paints I gave my 10 yr. old daughter popped out a few colors and got my exacto knife out. Shhhhhhh don't tell her lol.

I found an old empty wolfe basic mini palette attached to an old Klutz face paint book from years ago. So I ended up with 6 mini color combos.

End Result: Did I do it? Yes I did.

Will I do it again? Uhmmmmm NO I won't LOL

Trying to cut up those paints and figuring out what would look good with what???? More than one person can bear Evil or Very Mad

OK so maybe I am being a bit melodramatic Suspect
Some of the combos were pretty decent.......while other were more like What were you thinkin??? scratch

I resolve that I shall now and forever be a rainbow cake split cake arty cake consumer, it's a dirty job but someone's got to do it.

But thank you to you guys for inspiring me enought to give it a whirl
