You know - I would suggest that wanting comprehensive coverage - i.e. JBax's mention of kit being covered - is counterproductive. The premium you would pay for this would be heaps, and then how often would you ever claim? Just put that extra premium you would have paid each year, in the bank, and then if and when your kit ever gets damaged, you'll have more than enough to replace it.

Just get the minimum public liability that you will need to cover yourself with other people's claims.

That's my humble opinion, anyway, and my opinion of insurance in general.

My one toolbox containing my glamour kit would probably cost over $10,000 to replace ... just that one box. Trust me, insurance is worth it.

I have three bobbin cases of 25 lipsticks each, that's 75 individiual MAC and other lipsticks, PLUS several stacks containing another 30 or so... that's over 100 lipsticks... at an average of say $18 each = $1,800 replacement cost FOR JUST THE LIPSTICKS.

Then there is the eyeshadows, the palettes, the foundations, the liners, the powders, etc. etc.

If my FP kit was stolen - which is also one toolbox - that would cost about $5,000-8,000 to replace completely. You add up the cost of approx 200 sponges, the toolbox, the palettes, the paints, the brushes (about 40), the accessories, the supplies, the towels... well, that is a lot of cash.

And putting away $100 a year isn't going to cover any of that. If I'd been putting the $100 I pay for "kit replacement" since I started doing make-up professionally I would only have $1200 plus minimal interest accrued... that wouldn't even replace my lipsticks.

This coverage is for LOSS and THEFT... so if my car is in a wreck and my kit destroyed, or it is stolen, it is all covered.

I am only paying for $10,000 of kit replacement - that would get me started at least to a level of professional. I would still need to rebuild the rest of it over time.

There is a deductible of course... and most cases of "missing" individual items are not going to be claimed. Insurance is for the worst case scenario.

It is sort of like saying insure your house but not the contents IMHO.

My policy allows the option to add kit replacement in increments of $5000.

Well - I think we're both right, and I agree with you, Shannon, as well as still holding with what I said, for my situation, and perhaps others as well. Here you are, Shannon, at the top of your field, and probably at the peak of your career. One of the best - count 'em on one hand - face painters in the world. You've won lots of awards, right?

And, you're a makeup artist as well - which probably most of us are not. The kit for that sounds formidably expensive. So, naturally you have the kit that befits your standing - to win awards you can't be using a $20 Snazaroo beginner's kit. Laughing I'm not at all implying that expensive kit = awards - just saying that, natch, anyone that gets to the top is also going to love getting lots of good kit. I know I do, too. cheers

As a beginner face painter (but I still do take it seriously), I have maybe $300 to $400 (NZD) invested in my kit, so I don't think I'd bother insuring for it, because, honestly, the premiums would be high, and there is the deductible, don't forget.

If I was in Shannon's position (I wish) then yes, I would certainly insure my kit.

So I guess it all boils down to - we all have to do our own maths for our own situation.

However, now that Shannon has given some figures and scenarios, it's made me more aware of this issue. I will be keeping tabs on my kit, and when/if the time comes that the value of my kit becomes worth insuring, then I will do it.

Koolkat,

I would have to agree with you that it is important to know what your kit is worth. My total working kit is only about $300(I work small) so probably not worth insuring.

If you are working with less than $500 of actual kit... sure, put the money in the bank instead... but, keep an eye on value of what you have... and remember that it is EVERYTHING you use. Signs, tables, photo displays too. All of that would add up if you lost it all at once and had to rebuild from scratch.

So just to clarify: $210 for performers insurance which will also cover us a festivals/fairs where we have a booth and sell our service? And it covers glitter tattoos? Just want to make sure as I want to buy insurance. Although I've never had an incident YET, I want to be covered just in case.

My daughter's insurance was under Performers of the US. As a minor, they were the only ones I could find that would insure a minor. Both the Society of American Magicians and International Brotherhood of Magicians denied her coverage because she was under 18.

BluAngl as far as the venue, you're correct. I believe that glitter tats would fall under face painting/body art. You should give Stephanie a call to be sure.

I am somewhat torn, because just a rough "guestimate" I would say my kit is worth about $700.00. Although the majority of the initial outlay of cash was not mine as most items were purchased for me as gifts or by my company, but still to replace would be on me.........unless???? you think I could really get my company to foot the bill again.... lol Very Happy

So to clarify, I have a booth with table and chairs, signs, etc. My daughter and I do Face painting together, she is a minor still. So I would buy the vendor's insurance and it would cover everything? If I have my adult son join us and do balloons he would still be covered under my vendor's insurance?
My other is insurance is running out and is $550. so I would like to go for a less cost if it will cover me.
Thanks

Sam I Am - check out Duck for Cover insurance for entertainers (Australian) - duckforcover.com.au. There are 3 categories of activities, and you pay according to the highest risk category. Face painting and temporary tattoos are in Category 2, and the rate is about $165 AUD.

As far as insuring your kit goes you have to take into account the cost of getting it completely replaced.

In the last 2 months I have heard of two cases of painters loosing kit by opportunist thieves(kit boxes etc.), which I have never heard of in the previous 4 years. In view of the current economic climate this is only going to escalate.

Also insurers are advising that kits cannot be left overnight in cars as this would void insurance.

I recently took a note of all my paints as I was taking a small kit to a conference and didnt want to buy duplicates in the dealers room. I was staggered by how much I had actually acquired and how much it would cost for a new kit to the same standard.

One Snazaroo jumbo palette is $70.00, that does not include sponges or brushes, kit box, mirrors etc

Thanks Shannon, my local company has been insuring me but it went from $350 to $400 and I figured there had to be a better way.

Can someone explain the "hurt feelings" issue discussed under the "insurance coverage" forum?

I've not heard of this before.  Is this a legitimate complaint in face painting?

Being realistic, the face painter and the person receiving the painting may have different perceptions of what the painting is supposed to look like, even when you have a menu board and you paint the client as close as possible to the menu picture.

Youngsters may not understand that brush strokes vary, and if it is not exactly like the menu, they might be upset.  Is this what is meant by "hurt feelings" and if so, how does insurance cover it?
