Well actually Ashley DID say they were her very worst firsts, and talked about how horrible and laugh worthy they are....but Ashley, I HAVE to wonder if you are fishing for compliments or what, because I think it's plainly obvious to ALL of us that they are phenomenal, whether they were first or after 10 years of experience! If you are serious, you definitely need to not be so hard on yourself they are absolutely beautiful. And for those of you who are being intimidated by things like that, don't...I believe it to be true that you can do what you put your mind too. Sure, some people are more artistically inclined than others and will be more 'natural' right off the bat at things like face painting, but if it's something that is truly in your heart that you want to do, I think it is a matter of finding more simple designs, and a style that works for you, and just keep at it...That's the beauty of 'art'...there is no wrong or right, just style! Look at many works of famous artwork or art on walls, they aren't perfect, they are unique. Like a Star @ heaven alien

Kaci Anne,
I'm one of those people that gets intimidated when I see the artistic talent in this forum, but you are so right.
I volunteered to face paint last summer for the first time. The children were so kind and excited that it was truly rewarding. I haven't worked in almost two years and not use to being home. After so much positive feedback about the FP from the kids parents, my husband suggested I take it up as a hobby and go from there.
I do enjoy it and yes, I'm trying simple designs that can boost my confidence
and get me off to a more realistic start.
I did one birthday party at the persistence of a friend and did just the basic butterflies and sports designs. The mother of the birthday boy was so happy that she even had me paint a butterfly on her to match her outfit! Right now I'm just concentrating on honing my skills before doing any more parties.
My daughters have also said those words to me... "If you put your mind to it, then you can do it".... oh, isn't that what you're always telling us?

Its been a while since I took a look at the paintings I did years ago - so I got a chuckle out of this... and yes I cringed a bit when I look back and see those HUGE butterfly wings on such little faces. But we paint and learn and learn and paint and everyday we yield a brush or sponge we get better.

Enjoy Smile

Deanna, I love your reverse spidey! That is sooo cool. Your butterflies are magnificent and the rest look good too. Do you mind if I try that top right one with the green and pink? I can't see it real good but get the idea.

All I can say is that you guys have the benefit of the internet and your first attempts are pretty decent!!!

Years ago, in a place far, far away where there were no computers, cell phone or iPods... face painters, if they were lucky enough, had a couple of books they could refer to (books that are now scoffed at ...) and if they weren't lucky enough to find one of those books... they winged it...

I started face painting officially in 2005(I did paint myself up from Cats Halloween 1998, but I have no pics to know how well I did). Even then there just wasn't a lot to pick from. The bar has gotten pretty high & it's hard to even have an original design anymore.

Whew! I agree with Gr8ful! I need ALOT of work to catch up to your first paintings! LOL goodness me!
I do get inspired by looking at these though, I must wrangle the neighborhood kids in again with pizza this week. Mmm maybe a playdate with facepainting! ah ha! Thats the ticket, the only thing is, then most of my canvas will be only 2 yrs old and moving. My daughter holds pretty still for a two year old. Ive painted her alot, but still mostly hands.
thanks for sharing!! here is one of my first photos... oooo do I have to tell you this was recent? This is one of the neighborhood kids. .....its a dragon face.

Yes your right Shannon.. I did a class with Yolanda Bartram and she said exactly the same thing.. with all this knowledge at our fingertips we are so very lucky.. I have grown so much since being on this forum and just using the computer to peruse the worlds best face painters in amazing. whereas you guys have had to slog it out and learn everything on your own..still there must be alot of joy in excelling on your own.I have only just found the Snazaroo competition site.. It was wonderful to see so many people from on here winning and doing well..I felt quite proud to know you all...if only just a little...I have never loved learning as much as I do now. Bless you all..

No not at all - actually it was based on a design in one of the first face painting books I ever bought. hmmmm.. what was the title? Does anyone know? The one with the Tiger morph Butterfly on the cover - hardback - Nick & Brian Wolfe were featured in it. I know I have it around here somewhere. LOL

Wasnt sure where to put this but these are some faces I created just the other day at the gym! A first photo shoot for sure, a good start? I think they are cute, but defintly need work. I think its my paints! AND mostly my technique, I have been hounding youtube watching videos, - placing order this weekend for new paints to. Getting some decent sponges ( i been using black sponges on sticks) and brushes then Im just going to paint anything that holds still long enough! there are so many designs I have seen on here I want to practice. I know I can draw, my hand/cheek designs are just fine. Its the full faces that are intriguing me.
I need to also remember that I wont acquire the artistic talent EVER to create real looking things. I have a cartoony sense, always have had it and it wont change. Not me. I need to accept it, but its soo hard when is ee some of the shading techniques here. so awesome. thanks for looking! i was proud and had to share! i love making the little flowers

Thanks! I remember being so proud of that butterfly, and now it's just terrible Smile I still like to do the mask for kids, especially at birthday parties and things where they are eating. . .that way they don't get messed up as bad.

this is a really, really old thread... but even after looking at 20 pages of first photos... I still don't see anything else half as disgusting as my butterfly on page 5. LOL
And this one was probably my third face?? I actually sent her out in public like this for halloween... what was I thinking????

Oke...
I don't want to... it is really really really BAD!!!

Back in 2009, only had Grimas.
And the brushes... don't know what I had, but you see the result...
At that point I didn't had the feeling like making money with it, didn't show any talent... That changed just a little Very Happy (at least, I feel I can paint now!)
(What different brands of paint and brushes can do..)

Look at my perfect linework... LOL
