3 Minute Cheek Art Book Review

Post by Michelle Heffner on Thu Apr 08, 2010 1:45 pm

Review posted on the blog along with a completed design and one that I stole borrowed from Kerry Ann Smith as my interpretation of 3 minute cheek art.

My 6yo son LOVES this book so much I had to get a second copy! It's great for a beginner (like me)!

LOL! I totally agree with your review. I got the cheek art book, and yes, while it is a great starting point, it did lack some oomph factor. But it was useful, nonetheless. Maybe we just need more glitter?

I like your review Michelle!

I reviewed the book too... I was kinder about the text (which was written by Gary Cole NOT Roberta BTW)... but I did not read it thoroughly which I noted in my review!!

Here's my review

: )

Hey Shannon, yep, I knew Gary wrote it and I think his wife (family member?) edited it.

I honestly thought they should have removed the words and just left the pictures (like the Wolfe books).

Mostly though I can't stand the loooooong paragraphs of boring description. I need breaks in the wording or I stop reading and move on.

I'm reviewing Marcela's Mask book next week Smile

I know!

I'm trying to come up with a way to go over it w/o giving away the "secrets."

I had to be really forceful about the text in my book... I fought Gary on a lot of the editing he wanted to do to the SBS... I wrote the instructions on HOW I painted the face in the photo... he was adding things that I didn't even do! And adding "suggestions" for things I would NEVER do...

I think I was/have been the only one who actually WROTE their book... which Gary edited, in the other two (so far) Gary has written the text completely...

If anyone has Facing the Sea... check out the instructions for the "Sea Lion" on pages 52-53.... notice how the text refers to the design as an "otter"...

So I get the whole "control" thing as its his business and he wants all the Snaz books to sound alike, but really... snore fest.

And I would rather hear the different arists' voices than read boring, sanitized "instructions."

It would have been better w/o the HUUUUUGE blocks of white text on black background.

Short and sweet should be his motto from now on.

Short and sweet for sure!!! Too much information scares beginners... they get confused with the long instructions that bounce around with "suggestions" for other things...

The Facing the Sea book is NOT worth the money. I'm sorry but it's bad. Half of the faces are the SAME face, with a different color and name. And a lot of the faces are sloppily painted. Not impressed.

Which is odd as Lisa is a much better painter than what ended up in the book. I saw a couple of her preliminary designs (which were NOT in the book BTW) and they were excellent...

Gary has complete of say over what gets in the books and he has VERY particular specifications.
