Butterfly Vent

Post by magicnewe on Mon Apr 19, 2010 12:29 pm

I know I am new, and this all takes time, but I have done several different faces and have been quite pleased with the outcome as a newbie. However, with that said, I can't make a decent butterfly to save my life. I am getting really frustrated. I have tried several different styles and methods and I just don't like them. I know this is something I have to accomplish since it is so popular, but I am getting really, really frustrated. I did one the other day that I considered somewhat "passable" but the darn thing took me 19 minutes!

Sorry for the vent, I'm just really frustrated over what should be something simple.

Here is one attempt. I know its bad--- I'm just not feeling the whole "butterfly" thing.

Your cat face is very similar to a butterfly face. It would be a good starting place.

There's nothing "wrong" with it... you might try actually leaving out the inside lines... work on blending the base colours and just do a nice, clean thin to thick to thin outline around the outside. Keep it simple and let the colours and the blending do the wow-ing for you. A nice clean outline and a few white dots can actually look much cooler to me than trying to mimic all the segments in real butterfly wings.

I'm still working on my butterflies too, but you'll be amazed how happy kids can be with however your butterflies turn out. Not saying we shouldn't try to get better, but don't let it keep you from getting out there and painting.

I do have an example of a butterfly I did that is similar to the cat face! I did that last night and it is still in my camera. My daughter thought it was "okay" and liked it, but she said it wasn't a typical butterfly so she wasn't sure how the kids would like it. I tend to listen to her opinions since she is much closer to the ages of the kids than I am! LOL

Maybe they won't care?

Thanks for the design Anita! I like how bold your colors are. I was using a rainbow cake and didn't really like how the colors turned out. They weren't definitive enough like shown in your picture.

I did like the simple colors of the butterfly I did last night Perry. It was just a pink/orange combo that I blended so I agree that can sometimes make a better statement if done properly. Then I did some outlining similar to the cat like Psalmbook suggested above. My linework still needs work, but it is definitely coming along. I've only been doing this a short while so I am happy with that progress.

It is just the dang butterflies that seem to bother me. I think it is because I do tend to like "simple" clean lines.

However, I will keep at it until I can do a proper one--- I may get frustrated, but I won't give up!!

Thanks for letting me vent and get out my frustration ladies! Very Happy

I tend to just use two colours for my base, but I don't own any rainbow or split cakes at all right now. I've been painting for about a year and a half now and feel like I'm still working on what I really want in my kit. In a strange way, it is actually helping me that I found out that I cannot use some brands due to an allergy I have... it's keeping me from buying some of everything.

So far I just have the Snaz paints and have been happy with them (with the exception of my black turning gummy, but that is my fault for getting it too wet) and I am going to try and stick with Snaz.

I like how some of the other colors really "pop" on other brands, but what I like even more are the safety ratings on the Snaz paints. I just think that will make the parents feel safer about what I am putting on their kids' faces. Although, I have to admit if I were to branch out--- I would really like to get some Wolfe white.

Here is a very simple butterfly that we do on the young ones: we use a neon ranbow cake and in just 4 strokes you have the base, then we do the outline in white with a few simple strokes and just poof on some glitter- very fast, very simple and very colorful and eye-catching! And no two EVER look exactly the same LOL!

I think it looks great Perry. I love your colorings!

Here is the one I did last night. I just uploaded it off my camera to Photobucket.

Squiggle, I love the bold colors. Are you using Snaz paints? I really doubt that I could get the snaz white to go over the other colors like that. It just doesn't seem to want to work "on top" of the others-- at least not for me!!

Nope- those are the neon rainbow cakes that Metina sells on the FacePaintForum shop. I think they're DFX maybe but not sure. All I know is, we used up nearly 4 cakes of them in the last week- everyone loves the bright colors!
