Glitter Tattoos. Is it worth it?

Post by Painted Dragon on Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:23 am

So I contacted this local fair and asked about face painting. They said they already contracted a painter. (doh) and wondered if I offered any other services.

Do you think investing in Glitter Tattoos would be worth it for a fair? If so, which company is the best one to go with. Amerikan Body Art? Glimmer Body Art? Are they the same?

Thanks for any replies.

It would only be good if you think there is a demand in your area for glitter tattoos. I bought the kit from Glimmer and loved the glue and glitter pots. Some of their stencils are hard to remove so make sure you have a tweezer. Somd of Jody's are great too, but she has less options http://signatureglitter.com/ . I've never had a problem with the glue from Glimmer (I even left it in the car when it was cold and they never hardend) and they dont dry up. I've been using the same ones since October!

We just finished a 4-day event that was mostly at night and we did quite a few glitter tattoos, mostly on teens and older. But be prepared for school-aged children or teens who work in fast food places- they're not allowed to wear anything like that that can be seen, so we had to do most of the tattoos on the shoulder, upper arm, stomach or legs- never the face or lower arm or chest.

I just ordered 100/$30 from chit chat the clown/kim hatch- am i allowed to post the link?
they are same quality, just 2 layers...it was a nice assortment just to bulk up what I had.
I think I can make these myself with the cricut? (my friend has a cricut- I would have to borrow it- if she would let me-lol) has anyone ever tried it? i don't know if it would be cost effective though?

I've tried to burn my own stencils and the problem is, since there is no adhesive, the center pieces don't stick to the skin and the glue just runs all underneath, making a huge mess. I tried and tried different ways to do it, even buying temporary adhesive to go on the back, but nothing worked. I'm just sticking with buying the adhesive stencils.

I was thinking vinyl sheets, they sell them at craft stores... for scrapbooking, I think. Then contact sheets over the finished product- to make 3 layer?
That all gets too consuming though.... or at least my ideas are time-consuming-lol
plus the cricut is expensive Sad it was just a wild and crazy idea ;-)

Hmmm... I'll have to try it with contact paper- never thought of that! That might just work. I've tried with the vinyl and because it won't stick to the skin, it doesn't work.

I have a nifty burner pen that allows me to burn very intricate designs very quickly so I might give this a try this weekend after my parties.

But having to burn one for each tattoo you do would end up being very time-consuming! I might try it just to see if it would work for when we run out of a certain popular stencil and don't have time to re-order before a next gig. That would be nice to be able to do. But I don't think I'd want to do this on a regular basis- I'd spend all my time burning stencils! Razz

Polkadot: Is it harder to apply a 2-layer stencil? I am hesitant b/c i feel like the stencil would lose it's shape as i try to put it on...let us know!

I usually offer the glitter tattoos as an extra & let one of my daughters do it. Make sure to buy stenciles that are 1 piece. It's very hard to get free floating pieces in the right spot & it slows you down.

Do you use one stencil per tat? I've heard of people washing off and re-using until the adhesive doesn't work anymore. Seems expensive to have to buy bunches of each stencil.

*** Update... I just saw this answered in another thread... amazing!

I bought wholesale and got tons of them the first go-round and they were something like 35 cents each that way. I've since had to re-order the fleur-de-lis and butterflies once, but still have lots of the rest. I only use one stencil per tat- most get messed up when you take them off and can't be re-used.

I know this is an old thread but I make stencils on my cricut all the time. I make hundreds at a time. I use self sticking vinyl and mounting tape found at http://www.signsupply.com. I personally use ORACAL 641 or 651.
