This is the vid I was watching. She also does the roses. Sadly there are only three vids, but they are all good. Smile

Rebecca,

How "wet" is your brush? I seem to struggle with this also. To wet and the colors get muddy, too little and I don't pick up enough paint. I am sure it comes with practice, but thought I would cheat and ask.

What ABC cake is she using for the dolphin in the vide. It looks like white, light blue and violet. Is that right?

arty brush cakes...how much water?

Post by rebecca on Sat Jun 12, 2010 12:13 pm

when using an arty brush cake...you want VERY LITTLE WATER! that's the trick..and, you need to load your brush really well on both sides. if your brush splits, it means not enough water, or not enough
make-up. it is a feel...you'll get it as you use them

i don't know what cake she's using in the video...she called it ocean, but it's not the colors of the abc ocean

Thank you for sharing all these great ideas. I bought the peacock abc, and I cannot get it to work properly. The fire and leaf works great, but not the peacock? It is quite transparent...

Thanks Rebecca! I guess it just takes a good bit of practice. I don't know how you get more paint on the brush if it is dry? How does one keep loading with not much water?

I did practice your technique on the job today during down time and see to get more of a feel for it. I was getting it better by end. I plan to devote more practice time to your technique and split cakes and balloon twisting.

I have to say that your technique and your split cakes are a HUGE contribution to the face painting community. Thanks so much!

I tried spraying my cakes, but it gets them too wet. I usually dip the very tips of the flat brush into the water. This gets me the right consistency. If the brush is too wet, the cake will look runny. I'll then swipe the brush on a towel & go back to the cake. Sometimes I get it right every time & sometimes I have to work at it. Humidity can change things up a bit too. I still love & use them all the time. I especially love cakes made out of the same brand as you have less uneven wear. I have a bunch I made from a Wolfe pallet & love them!

I spray make cakes big and small when using a sponge, but not when using a brush. I find that if I dip more than just the tip of the brush in the water it is too wet to load properly.

-- side note--- that video is great, but did anyone else think that the music was a tad wierd for the subject? It reminded me of that movie Heavy Metal, people in the 70's getting stoned, kind of vibe. I like it, but I don't know how well it fits. --- end of side note, thank you ---

Hahaha Jbax I was thinking the same thing. Strange music choice.
I agree with Psalm about the mix of brands in the artycakes and the uneven wear. The ones I liked I remade with similar paradise colours.
Although in my experience unless the cake is all metallic or all flat you get uneven wear anyway - might just be the paradise but the metallic's need more water and more aggravation for good colour coverage so if you have a strip of gold or silver in there it doesn't show up too well.
Can't wait till I have another chance to buy more paints, love to get my hands on some DFX splits.

just a note

the arty cakes are designed to wear evenly?

different colors may be activated with different amounts of water

the mix of make-up in the arty cakes is targeted at addressing the wear issue

there should not be uneven wear?

please e mail me direct with the combinations you are having problems with...and, i'll look into it!

thanks,
