I am very glad you are coming to my class. But, if you get a chance, Jinny is very much the "IT" girl in the face painting world. And Marcela is my personal hero. Heather's style of teaching to so easy to follow and clear.

I know they are doing their classes several times, so try to attend if you can.

What is your real name, so I can look for you?

I said "shady" and "shill" because that is what came to mind when I read Heidi's rebuttal review.

I don't mince words about my personal feelings.

I get it that you, Lily, are marketing the pants off of your personal brand. Way to go! All the blogs I subscribe to are a buzz with that kind of stuff.

Please try to relax though. This Face Painting world is so very small. We don't like it when marketers go overboard on the schmooze factor. We don't like to feel like we got ripped off.

Under promise and over deliver and you will go much further with us.

Over promise and under deliver and we will talk.

Lilly, last month I tried out the sample page design at the Jam but my snaz metalic silver & gold were too sheer and model Barb let me use her wolfe gold to try it out but that color didnt look good at all. It was quick & fun to paint, tho and Barb just loved it, esp stones in her fav color that matched it in her dress Wink

I hate to admit it, but I am now intrigued. I don't do jewlery, but think this would go over well with the teen crowd.

Does the book actually explain how to get the 3-D effect or just show pictures? I am a bit thick and I really need both to "get it". If I could get only this concept from the book, I would be thrilled.

Someone who has the book and tried the designs, please let me know.

Also, $25 is REALLY high in my opinion if the photos are not professional. SF has this as the "sale" price. What is the normal price?

Metina I recently purchased a jewlery illustration book that covers metals and stones etc. it's one of the go to books for my industry if you are interested I will give you the name and where I got it. It is really important to go back to the source of what you are painting to capture the essence. Alot of the advanced stuff is going to be difficult for people with out art training because of all the basics of shawdow and chariscurro you need to know. Identifying the light source and where the shawdows will fall.

Last month I did a photo shoot for Woman's Day Magazine and I needed to simply my designs enough so that the average mom could paint it for halloween. That was a real challenge. I have been spending months becoming more complicated - now I had to simplfy and get the same message across.

I think at this point most people here can already do their version of jewelry - maybe we should start a thread talking about how to achieve a 3D effect.

Metina, see Lynnie's review, she says: "Next comes the section on how to make 3D items. While the book is about jewelry, there are fantastic tips for this that really to apply to any design."

Also, you can see just a few paragraphs from the teaser pdf about 3-d effects,
see http://www.funfacepainting.com/3d_jewels_necklacessample.pdf

Hopefully others who have the book in their hands will post their unbiased thoughts about the 3-D chapter in the book Smile

Metina~ I did answer your PM but also will answer here Wink

The book actually does explain shadowing, highlighting and 3D effects very clearly. It goes into how to design your own jewelry and even how to make jewels more realistic and faceted. There are photos but there are plenty of words to give you great ideas, including step by steps based on jewels alone. I find that part extremely useful because it can be applied to any design you want to put a "jewel" in, not just jewelry.

I think that for what you have mentioned, you would find the book~ especially the first few sections~ very useful. Smile

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Metina the name of the book is Techniques in Jewelry Illustration and Color Rendering by Adolfo Mattiello I googled around and got it at good price. I have certain books I keep as references. I just bought some insect books by National Geographic in borders for like 5 bucks. I am getting to a level where I need to go back to the source rather than relying on everyone elses interpretations. Not to say I don't use popular designs all the time but going back to the reference materials keep me fresh and thinking.
I have also found I can find techniques such as shading and 3d for free by googling what I am looking for it's all basic principals.
