Ancient Egyptian Theme....plus questions.

Post by Painted Dragon on Mon May 17, 2010 11:54 am

So this is my first themed party and the birthday girl is having an ancient Egyptian theme. When you all have themed events, do you only bring samples related to the theme? Trying to figure out enough things that would give enough variety for ancient egypt.

Cat
cobra/snake
egyptian eyes
egyptian mask
maybe a pyramid scene on the side of the face
Anibus mask (that dog-like face god)
cheetah
Something with a scarab beetle.. not sure what though
mummy

Any more ideas out there?

You could do and ankh or the eye of horas. A sphinx or a sarcophagus maybe? Have you ever watched the Ten Commandments...lots of things you could draw from that movie.

You could paint the big necklaces on them?

Generally I do not come up with "special" displays or designs for a themed party.

I put out my regular book and they pick or just tell me what they want. Since my pages are sort of themed anyway we might pull out the page (i.e. the butterflies) and just leave it out for the kids to look at.

Taking the time to come up with "new" and/or "orginal" designs is a cost factor - it takes up my time and is not generally a recoverable cost for a birthday or other party type booking.

For special events or one-of jobs the design time is worked into my fee if they want a theme or custom stuff.

I do have tons of designs/photos so I usually can come up with a selection for almost any theme at this point, but unless it is something really special I just wing it if asked for something I haven't done before.

Painted, last weekend I had a Jack Sparrow themed pirate party. It was no extra effort to incorporate a few pirate designs from the movie in with everything else I do. I did just as many of my own designs as the pirates...all the kids were happy and so were the parents. I made a black blue and red no sew tutu to wear with my standard black outfit and an eye patch. All the other props were taken care of by the customer.

So did most kids pick the pirate ones, changing face? Or did you have kids pick your regular designs too?

I prepared for a Chinese New Year Party a while back & none of the kids wanted the theme items. I felt like it was such a waste, but then incorporated them into my regular designs. I realised it expaned what I could offer & kept me challenged. In the long run I really didn't mind. So, prepare for the theme if you'd like, but don't be disappointed if you still only do butterflies & spidermans.

The majority of the kids especially the girls chose my designs, but I did have maybe 10 kids 9 boys & 1 girl pick the pirate designs....they were really into the theme of the party.... lolol

I am always setting up new sheets since I haven't been doing this that long I am still working out my book - I guess eventually I will be able to get the pages themed and in order. I edit all my own graphics so creating new sheets is easy and quick. I do bring picture references if something special is requested I haven't done before.
But if it is a theme party I only bring that theme -cause that's the idea of a theme.

I had a couple of 'themed' parties, and only the birthday kid was into the 'theme', all the rest just choise a ton of 'whatevers' or 'I dont knows', when that happens the kid may be in for a big surprise......'mahwawawaw!'

hmmm I love Egyptian, some of my first attempts at serious face paint designs were Egyptian. I am thinking it may get very popular as a theme here in Denver as the King Tut exhibit is coming this summer too. cheers

Maybe make a cartouche of the birthday girls name? Be super tricky to do for just anyone, but could be a nice special thing to research for the guest of honour.
