Glitter Tattoos. Does it matter what % alcohol you use?

Post by Painted Dragon on Tue May 25, 2010 12:58 am

I see some list 99%. How is that better than, say the 91% I can get at Walmart? If so, why exactly?

And if I need to use the 99%, where can I easily find it?

Thanks.

I use the small pre packaged alcohol wipes, the ones they use in hospitals just before you get a shot. They are only 70% or 77% alcohol and work just fine.

In my experience, I use 91% in a spray bottle and cotton balls to wipe the skin, but I use 99% to clean the lip gloss containers when they get gunky around the openings from all the dried glue.

They don't sell anything but 70% here so that is all I use.

I use 70% pads from the diabetic section of walmart. They work fine. I use 91% w/ a cotton ball to remove a glitter tattoo & it works fine.

The only time 99% is essential is for activating tattoo inks... the others do not work as well due to the water content (that's what the other percentage is).

70% is the best for santizing as it stays wet longer allowing more contact.

The type of alcohol you use for glitter tats really depends on what you are doing with it.
For prepping the skin, the little prep pads, an alcohol pump, or a spray bottle and cotton balls using any % will work, so why no just use the less expensive 70%.
If you are wanting something strong enough to clean up messy adhesive, then you need a stronger grade of alcohol.....91% should be fine and is readily available at stores like Wal Mart.
You only really need 99% to activate certain alcohol based tattoo inks.

Personally, for glitter tattoos, I just use the 70% for prep and 91% for a rinse since I use a different cleaning method altogether for cleaning adhesive out of my brushes (when I do freehand glitter tats) and off of my supplies.
