Breathe! It takes time to build a relationship of trust. Testimonials help. Give people time to find a reason to hire you. Do you have a facebook page? I've received a lot of work from there because you're constantly reminding people of what you do. I put up playdate photos as well as paid gigs. Join an organization and get out there volunteering somehow. Do you have any women's groups in your town, or a chamber of commerce? Once you build relationships, you'll be amazed at how many opportunities come up. Woody Allen says '90% of life is showing up'. We have to be reminded of something several times before we finally decide to buy. We buy two things...solutions to problems and good feelings. Try to emphasis the benefits of what you offer in that context.

'Be the most unique party that guests will be talking about for a long time with amazing face painting!'...etc.

Stay positive and keep trying Very Happy

Is there a 4th of July event of some sort in your community? Festival work is a good way to get your name out there, although I haven't gotten much (make that any) party bookings from it. But, the festivals I did last year are calling me to ask if I could come again. I'm going slowly, but I hope in the next year or so to paint full time.

I agree with having a Facebook page. We post ads for our Bouncy Castles & Glitter Tattoos in the Craigslist "Baby & Kids" section. We've gotten a lot of exposure from there.

as much as I never "work for free".... what you may want to do with some of these businesses where you want serious repeat gigs is offer to do a free trial event. You both promise to advertise that you will be there as much as possible, and you both get to see how it goes. After the event, you can negotiate future events at a reasonable rate. You could still give out your cards and collect tips, but it allows them to see what it might be like to have you there regularly.

I haven't had many bites on those kinds of gigs either, but the trial night was suggested to me at one point, so maybe it will work for you. Honestly, I haven't even had anyone bite on a free trial night... but I am doing a free grand opening (bit of a long story, but I will already be in clown that day, just going to balloon twist for a couple hours, and it's for a kids' book store at the mall... so it will probably get my foot in the door with doing paid stuff for them later). I trust the person I was talking to, but can you believe they have no budget at all allocated to a grand opening?

I did what Perry suggested. I volunteered to paint @ my youngest daughter's daycare. I asked for some time just to practice and they suggested I paint at the Ice Cream Social they were having one evening.

The daycare approached me to paint at the 4th of July Event in town (it's 2 1/2 days). They have a booth.

Here is the deal they gave me. I can share the tent and charge my own prices. Even tho I offered, I do not have to put anything toward the cost of the booth. They stated that they feel I will bring more attention to them @ their booth. Which will give them exposure and hopefully more business for the daycare.

Testimonials do help a lot. I noticed you only have one on your site.

When I'm done with a job, I email my customers an 8 question Satisfaction Survey the last question is "8. Would you please leave a comment that we can publish to our site?"

Not everyone fills in the comments section, but I think sending customers a form to fill out betters your chance of getting some testimonial statements to post.

I don't know. I wouldn't pass judgment on you, but I wouldn't do it. You have worked for others in the past right? Why not get in touch with them and ask them for a testimonial?

I have a facebook. Are their more than one type of page? I do post pics & where I'm gonna be, etc on it. I've also sent out invites to open events I'll be at. I'd love to utilize this tool more, but I'm not sure how. Any advice?

to the left of your screen there is a list of things like "games" "applications" "ads&pages" ...click on ads and pages and you can create a page just for your buisness.

It does take time and lots of work to get established.

A lot of getting work is word-of-mouth and networking. I don't advocate working for free but volunteering in a related capacity - like at a local theatre to help with make-up - is a good way to meet people and learn while making contacts.

I also made a deal with a summer day-camp - I would face paint the campers for "free" in return for photos and permission to use the photos - that made contact with the camp staff, the kids, the parents, the people at the park - every kid when home with my card.

And I am not on Facebook.

I hardly every work for free nowadays, but I did my share in the begining to get my name out there. One thing that I have done is contacted the principal at my daughters' schools and asked her to email the teachers saying that I was willing to come in and do a lesson of sorts with face painting for the teachers based on a theme.

These were during the week and not taking up a weekend work day.

Unfortunately it is part of paying your dues in this industry. Just try and think of it as practicing and get some good photos.

Also offer to come into festivals are events and do ppf. You can earn some money and get exposure. Another thought is to contact the local newspapers and radio stations and offer to work in trade for going to their big events in trade for advertising. They usually cover good events and always put out your tip jar.

Why can't friends write testimonials? If you did work for them and they provide an honest review, it should be fine. The fact that they knew you before and like you is just how you got the opportunity. The important thing is to always ask for a testimonial Very Happy
