Glitter: Dry vs Gel

Post by Elise on Wed Jun 30, 2010 1:46 am

Which one do you prefer? And what are the pro's and con's of each ?

At previous events, the organisers have supplied us with glitter gel, like face paints except clear with glitter in them. Now that I'm buying my own, just thought it would be good to hear your thoughts Smile

The gel doesn't dry fast enough ( if at all ) for me to use it at gigs, especialy on kids. I use loose dry glitter on wet paint, or I reactivate it with a bit of water - some people use Vaseline, or aloe gel.
I know quite a few people do use them, so I might be alone on this one.
I do keep gold glitter gel for adults though. It looks great lining masks and adding detail. You can just buy dry glitter and make up your own gel with aloe gel if you like..... then you have both!

I have & use both. I only use glitter gel on adults because the kids smear it before it dries. I like the poof bottle or the wand for application.
If you're just starting, get the Iridescent Peal White(Metina has it in her shop). It looks great over any color paint & enhances the design.

I had the glitter gel when I started.... it smears the paint when you apply it... looks sloppy and the gel dries out and makes it unusable. I just use the dry glitter in a poofer bottle over a whole design at the end. It's not precise, but it's beautiful and all the kids want is to sparkle. I have one graffiti glitter, but I don't use it often because it usually gets clogged in the middle of what I'm trying to do and I was silly and bought the colour Marcela suggested instead of the colour I knew I wanted. Maybe I'll get the colours I like next time and I might make the effort to use it more. Unless it's in a graffiti bottle though, I won't ever bother with gel glitter again.

I too use both, now. up until this past spring I've only ever used dry, it's easier to use, looks fantastic, and is not as easy to mess up. My favortie color is silver, I bought a bunch of small glitters from Pat "Pitter Pat" Newton at last year's MWCA convention and it's literally the best glitter I've ever used. But opinions on color and brand vary, so definately consult a lot of people and just try some out yourself to see how you like it. I love the glitter for ages 12 and up, as any younger they tend to smear it. It's a great accent to any design and is much more precise. But you also can have the issue of clogs, drying out, or air bubbles. It really all comes down to personal preference.

I use dry loose glitter when face painting in public, and Liquid Bling or other similar gel for adults and private parties (in the applicator bottles). The gel is too expensive to use for the huge events.

Hmm looks like i will definitely be buying some more dry glitter, but for now i have some expensive makeup glitter from a couple of years ago that i might as well use up Smile I played with it a bit last night and decided that I actually like the dry glitter too. It's so much easier but just as effective.

Oh and, as i live in Australia would I still be able to purchase stuff from the shop? I'm thinking it might be better to source it from places in Australia hopefully so the postage and handling costs aren't as high.

Actually I use gel. I usually 'dot' it in clusters and lines of dots and it stands out like jewels no problem. I have a wee pouffer which is handy for fast and furious gigs but yes, when I hit upon 'dotting' the gel it really made a difference

Dry glitter and spirit gum work the best for me! Especially for keeping the glitter in the one place you want it to stick, It still gets everywhere, but the trick is to do it when the paint is dry (or semi) so that the excess glitter can be brushed off with a soft brush.

I use dry glitter (transparent in gold or silver) in puff bottles before I line or with the black paint (first dip in paint, then the glitter). The graffiti ones for "jewels" and sometimes blood for female vampires (not for the smallest kids) and liquid glitter gel (the ones that comes with a brush). I don't use the brush but a cotton bud and apply it on the lips (with or without makeup first) and sometimes noses on female tigers. It stays on a lot longer that just paint, kind of like it seals it. And it is great for girls that have so small lips you can't really paint lipstick on them without getting over top of the lips. I don't want to do that, since it indicate that her lips is too small.

Sorry to sound like a novice here but what is a poofer? I've only used dry glitter and I have trouble with it sticking but the aloe idea is perfect!

You fill it with loose glitter and squeeze it gently and the glitter will fly out. It will stick the best to damp paint.

I like dry. Dry glitter for me. HOWEVER, I am going to keep a little bottle of vaseline handy because I think that is a great idea! If you use the tiniest amount it should be great! It's not going to evaporate.

Perry!! I am so glad you are using this new avatar! It really looks like YOU sweetie!! : Razz

Hi Elise,
tagbodyart.com sell it the cheapest that I've found in Australia (I'm in QLD too). I have the holographic white and it's really pretty. They are sending me sample swatches too to check out colours so if you want to PM me I'll send it on to you once I've checked it out.
Cheers
