Making Sponges Out of Green Cushions

Post by Psalmbook on Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:42 pm

Have any of you done this? I've been eyeing the green cushioning from Joann's & finally bought one. It makes great sponges for super cheap($7 for 25 sponges & I've still got over 1/2 a cushion). They feel great on the skin. I cut them to look like cosmetic wedges. I tried circles & 1/2 circles, but they look awful. They still work well, but look very choppy. I'm trying to figure the best way to cut them so they look professional.... any suggestions?

I wonder if you could use a hole bit for a drill to make round sponges???

I do that also, but mine look junky and choppy... still work I guess but I am not sure the best way to cut them. I tried a carving knife and that didn't work too well.

You have to cut into rectangles if you are cutting your own. Let us know how they paint!

Ok Ladies! My dad is an upholsterer and makes custom fine furniture etc so I know what you are talking about. The material is very hard to cut smoothly so you will need a punch similar to what you use to make custom buttons. You can also wet it, put in a ziploc and push ALL the air out and freeze it and then cut what you need. Tracing a round cookie cutter or something similar might help and sharp scissors are a must!

CP, thank you! I love how it works, but really want to look like I'm using uniform sponges. I know the rough ones work just as well, but they just look sooo sloppy:-)

Awesome, CP! This will be interesting project, because I've been pondering on this for some time. I even bought a cookie cutter that's about sponge size, wondering if it would work. I don't know when, but I'm going to give it a go too.

A hot-wire foam cutter works great for many foams and can be had for about $25. You can also make them yourself if you are a crafty sort. The cost to make will probably equal the store bought ones but here are a couple sites to buy or make your own. Beware of the fumes ,some foam fumes are not as bad as others. Well ventilated areas are the best.

Foams you can use the hot-wire on
All thermofusible expanded foams. This means those materials that melt at a relatively low temperature:

Expanded polystyrene (blocks of expanded white balls).
Extruded polystyrene (in blue, green, gray, pink or purple smooth plates, depending on the manufacturer).
Polymethacrylimide low density rigid foam (Rohacell), excellent mechanical properties but very expensive.
Flexible expanded polypropylene foams, ideal for shock protecting.
Polyethylene foams, flexible and tear resistant.
Custom materials, such as the foams used in flexible fuel tanks to reduce explosion risks.

to make:

this is just to show one available for purchase . Can probably be found at Michaels or HobbyLobby

Honestly? Sounds like too much work to save a few pennies. AND..I know that is not the same material as the green fantasy sponges. Those sponges are the best and are worth every penny. Once you get your hands on one, you'll wonder why you even bothered. If only they had a rounded one like my speed sponges.

Ladies, quality sponges will last you for years and years. Don't waste your time on all this.

Re: Making Sponges Out of Green Cushions

Metina doth speak the truth. I tried these when I was first starting out and I got complaints from some kids (and an adult) about the roughness of the sponges. My daughter was particularly adament about my not using those because she said they were too scratchy, especially around the eyes. I sent a sample off to Metina to have them compared to the FWW sponges and she verified my concerns. I received some FWW sponges from a Secret Swapper and I've never gone back. It was hard for me to get my daughter to trust that THOSE green sponges were the soft ones at first, but now when I paint her, she insists on the 'soft greenies'. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on them because while they appeared to be economical, they weren't formulated to be in direct contact with the skin as the complaints I revealed proved. Naturally, you can do what you like, but I'm providing my 2-cents worth of experience and Metina's 'research' data for you to consider as well.

I bought mine from Jodi Carr, but I don't know if she still carries them. It would be great (hint hint) if Metina could carry them but I don't know if that would require that she open a new account with FWW. Never hurts to ask...

I caved. I went ahead and ordered 3 sets of 10. I figured if by some miracle I don't love them they will be easy to rehome.

I keep hearing about these awesome green fantasy sponges, but have never seen them anywhere. I'm curious & would love to try them.

I tried the car wash sponges(a waste). They are very scratchy & I only use them when I want a rougher texture(for bruises & scrapes on my bloody, beat up boy face) & I only use them lightly on the skin. The sponges from the cushions are very soft & work well with the paint.

yeah I have some of that cushion stuff also, when compared to the FWW sponges there is still a difference. Don't get me wrong, the ones I have from the green sponge foam from joanne fabrics are soft.... but FWW sponges are still softer. Smile

Now.... Anyone ever try the FWW face paint?!?!? I ordered some and I can't wait to try it. I wonder why I never hear anyone talking about it
