LONG - JUST VENTING - My son...thanks Lord.

Post by CreateFaces on Fri Jul 23, 2010 1:51 pm

My 17 year old son has been struggling with high school from the get go. Last year he dropped out at the beginning of his Junior year. My husband and I were at our wits end that our son, who in all other regards is just about the perfect son and brother could be this lost in school.

We had gone through all the normal ways of trying to help him, school counselor, private counselor, babysitting him through his homework etc, etc, etc but nothing seemed to motivate him. I mean, we couldn't go to school for him ya know? I would drop him off and he would go in the front door and out the back door.

When he dropped out, my mother offered to take him to stay with her in Illinois and try to finish the year out there. This seemed to do the trick until strife between my 21 year old brother and mother started. The situation got ugly and it was no place for my son to stay and thrive.

He managed to finish out the year and is now back home. Again, we had no idea what was to come, he said that he didn't feel like he could graduate from the local high school especially since all his old friends were there. He said he felt like he would just go right back to his old ways.

I started looking for alternative public schools and found one that is in the next town over. There was an interview process and assessment that is required to be admitted. This school caters to kids who have dropped out or are in danger of dropping out of school. It's associated with a local community college and the kids are given an opportunity to take college courses as well.

When we first walked into this school, it was very strange as it's located in a downtown office building on the second floor. As we entered there were kids and adults all around painting the walls all different colors and there was art everywhere. My son showed a lot of interest in what was going on and wanted to know all about the school.

During the interview, he showed pics of his art that were on his phone to the Director. She asked him what he wanted, if he really wanted to go to this school or if he was just there at the interview to make his parents happy. He replied that he really wanted to go there and had tears in his eyes. He said he knew he had screwed up, but needed a new school to help him with a fresh start.

I've never seen him interested in school since he was little and this caused me to get teary as well. Soas we left the interview I thought to myself that we needed to find him a new school even if this one didn't admit him, because he DID want to finish, he just needed more help than he was letting on.

No need to look at other schools, we got the word yesterday that his application was accepted!

One less thing to worry about this year...

Congratulations to your son for not giving up! And congratulations to his great parents for not giving up and helping him find a school that's the right fit for him!

A+ parenting!

cheers Everything turns out well in the end, just sometimes it can take longer than we may have patience for. Another option would be for him to get his GED and may be go to art school or take art classes before entering college. It seems art is his passion so maybe this will help him find his way Smile

cheers
I'm so happy for you & him! We homeschool because our school system couldn't offer what we needed for our oldest(now a college student about ready to graduate). The rest just fell in line w/ the homeschooling & it's been such a blessing! My youngest has some learning difficulties & really struggles. It's tough when the schools can't offer what is needed to excel. I'm glad he's finding a place he can fit in & learn on his terms.
You should give your son some face paint & let him work w/ you Very Happy
