DFX Gemstone Powder Demo

Post by Metzpah on Fri Aug 20, 2010 3:44 am

I got some samples of the colours Metina is carrying in the shop. I played with them dry as a powder over paradise white base on half my face and straight on the other half of my face. I used all the colours in the same place on each side.

Then I mixed a few colours up with mixing liquid and experimented with a necklace. I highlighted the necklace with metallic white dfx and a bit of shadowing with metallic black dfx. The base of the necklace was the sunstone, traced with the amber on top, shaded a little with the onyx, and the "gem" is the emerald.

These are very similar to Mehron Precious Gems powders. Similar colours and work pretty much in the same way. I would say the onyx is more of a silver (I usually think black when I hear onyx)

If anyone has any questions, let me know, and I still have a bit more I could experiment with.

Thank you for posting this!
The necklace looks great! I have a few questions.
How do you know how much mixing liquid/powder to make? I remember Shannon saying in another thread not to mix & store it as it has the potential to explode & make a mess of your kit.
Is it easy to work with?

I am still experimenting with mixing liquid but a little of the concoction goes a very long way, so don't have to mix a big pile of it. I think I had about a finger tip size pile of dust and a dribble of the mixing liquid, but I test on my hand for consistency. if I can draw a line that is not goopy, flows smoothly and is opaque, then it should be good.
I confess I have not made much painted jewelry yet. This is my first with the powders and mixing liquid and it's a bit rushed just so I could show off the powders.
So I need practice with highlights and shadows myself. There are others who could probably explain methods about creating more realistic looking jewelry, but basicly think of a light source and put the white highlights on that side and the shadows on the opposite side.
I bet a traditional painting book/instructions would be very helpful Marie-F.
hope that helps some Smile
