Tent walls DONE!

Post by melisadill on Tue Aug 31, 2010 1:41 am

So sorry I disappeared for a while, but I have been working and painting like a mad woman on my tent walls. My inspiration came from a lady on another forum who painted a beautiful garden & fairy design on her tent walls for a ren festival. Well I had to give it a go and I'm so happy with how they came out! I drew it out with a white pencil and then painted it. The design I chose translates to my business cards and web site. Plus, it's gonna give me a black background when taking pics. Hubby is outside working on my display boards. Really feeling accomplished!

WOW......that is awesome!!! Please give us details.......what kind of paint, etc. You did an outstanding job! My tent walls are white like the canopy, wonder if it would work on those as well? Also, are your walls full size, they look shorter than the ones I have.

I just killed myself and google trying to figure out the best way to do this because I am super impatient!!! LOL

Looks like the original person she was talking about used Muslin material and just plain old run of the mill acrylics Very Happy

This is awesome! I really love the fact that any pics you take not only will have a black background, but also have your business name and design framing them!! Very smart!

Do you use lighting inside your tent? I would think the black might make it a little dim inside.

Re: Tent walls DONE!

Post by melisadill on Tue Aug 31, 2010 1:26 pm

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!! With the amount of work that I put into it, it makes me feel so much better that it's liked!!! And I'm sorry ya'll! When I posted that I hit the sack cuz I was SO tired! And I have 3 small youngins, one in school, so this am has been busy too.

SO...here are the details: Suzy Sparkles is right, the original artist used the muslin material and acyrlics. If I remember correctly, she used ropes and a series of wholes at the top of the "walls" to hang hers. Well, I wanted the black and muslin wouldn't work for me, so what I used was canvas. When I hung it, I didn't want you to be able to see right thru, & that's why I did the canvas. It is Five foot wide so that is the length of the wall, no it does not go all the way to the ground. I wanted it that way for air flow. The original artist said that hers was a little shorter and it provided the flow, but once she extended it to the ground, there was none at all! So, what I'm gonna do is leave it like that for now, but once the cooler temps kick in, I'll add extra fabric. What I like about my design is that I can add the plain black at the bottom & it won't look weird or out of place and I won't have to do any more painting, yay!! So, now the paints was acrylics, and it has many coats on there, most are two, but with the orange it took 5!! Something i didn't want, but it happened anyway is it bled thru to the other side. Not bad, but yuck, oh well. Now for hanging it, I'm in that stage right now. I have an EZup & on the top canvas it has velcro strips that the original walls attach to. I am using those and putting velcro on my walls to attach. At the corners I am using velcro as well. I'm attatching white velcro to the legs and the material to use for stabilization. It's kinda hard to describe, but I'll show pics as soon as it's done. I'm an easy is best as long as it works, kinda chick. So for right now it's definately a trial thing. Once it's all together, I'm gonna leave it set up to see how everything holds together. Fingers crossed!! Bad news tho, it's raining today so it'll have to be tomorrow, poo!

Now someone mentioned using the original walls that came with the tent. On my EZup, the walls are a vinyl kinda material. My husband has been in the house painting biz before and he said that the paint would start cracking and flaking off. The original artist also was in the decrative painting side and she said the same thing! So, be careful what type material you choose to paint on!

Um, don't think...oh, ok. The way I got the design on the material is I looked on the internet to get inspiration of what I already had in my mind I wanted it to look like. I got a white pencil that you can get in just about any sewing department and used that to draw with. I just free handed it, so it's certainly not perfect(especially the stars!) You can use baby wipes to erase or the end of the pencil(there is a brush thingy). Now for my letters, I got on my computer, chose a font I liked and printed it out to the size I needed. Then I cut them out, used small pieces of tape to place on the banner and then traced around them and then of course painted it.

The black walls and darkness is a concern!! Not exactly sure what I'm gonna do with that. The top is white and the front is open, so, fingers crossed again, that will work. I can always take a wall down if needed. Another option is getting electricity and using white christmas lights. Just not sure yet, that's a glitch in my plan! Hehehe!

I think I covered all the questions, if there are any others, I'll be happy to answere! Thanks again ya'll!!

I'll bet that for those who don't want have the paint show through the back (painting fabric nearly always bleeds, put something under it!), it would be simple to attach any fabric walls you've painted directly to the inside of your original walls! then the velcro would already be on there and everything.

I think bright colors like this would look just as lovely on white, as well, if lighting is a concern.

You can use textile medium mixed into the acrylic paint to give it a bit more flexibility and staying power, if you need to, and heat set it with the iron (tinfoil between iron and paint, because it can get melty) to really get it in there before you use it too much or wash it. how convenient to have machine washable walls!

Be careful folding or rolling it. If it's warm the paints might stick to each other ruining the design.
