I feel so sad for you. I have a neighbor who poisoned one of my cats. I understand the loss you are feeling. Prayers to you.

Its a miracle that Hoggle and you were not more injured! I hope you both will feel better soon!

Unless you are a certified animal behaviourist or a veterinarian please don't give your opinion about pitbulls (or any other breed for that matter). I have three PURE male pitbulls that are part of my family. All animals have the ability to cause harm. This was just a tragedy. Yes, that particular dog did need to be put down -violence like that cannot be tolerated. I agree that you did the right thing. My heart goes out to you.

I have a pitty mix here that's 6 we have had him since he was about 4 months, he's a rescue, he was kicked and his hip and pelvis where shattered. He went to get into the fight and when I kicked at him he went to the house. I am not against Pits. The one that I put to sleep was one of those that just snapped and being 2 he was trying to move up the pack. I regret the whole mess but I can't go back. I may have been able to rehome him but a dog that fights and has no reguard for the human is a serious problem waiting to happen.
When you have this many dogs they have to get along and they have to respect me.

It's really a tough situation trying to rehome a dog that has bitten a person, especially a mid-large size breed.
Though I am a dog lover, I think I would have done the same and had this dog put down simply because I would not want the responsibility of this dog potentially hurting another person.
Don't look back, focus on healing.

Sometimes the safety of everyone is a consideration. It doesn't matter how much of an animal lover you are - if an animal deliberately hurts another being, then that's it as far as I'm concerned.

I was raised on a farm and can't even count the number of animals I've lived with... we ate some, sold some, buried some from old age.... and destroyed a few. It all goes with being a responsible animal caretaker.

There is no reason to let the guilt overwhelm you. Be sad, but you did the right thing.

I'm sorry, its not only my personnal opinion. In France my Home country those dogs are forbidden since 1999. After too many deadly accident or really serious injuries they decided that it was enough. In 1999 all the owners of pitbulls (AMERICAN PITTBULL TERRIER. AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER, BOERBOEL, TOSA NON LOF and any breeding with one of those) add the obligation to go register their dog to the police and then to the vet to sterilize them.

like cesear milan says, there is no such thing as a bad dog, just a bad trainer....not saying (shandi) that you were a bad owner, just that there were underlying issues that you didnt know about from previous owners and that in a perfect world there would be cesear milans everywhere to help us with our doggy friends.

Yes some dogs are aggressive naturally, so we need to learn to curve that aggression by excerscising it out.

Hech, a toy poodle could attack someone! I know so many big dogs that are babys and let other dogs bully them...each animal is different.

Shandi, my heart goes out to you b/c you will feel guilty regardless if you did the right thing b/c your mind will alway say, "what if..." You wanted to protect the rest of your family and you chose the best option for you. the loss of an animal is like a loss of a child/family member. Sometimes worse b/c an animal cant speak verbally only by their actions can you tell something is wrong. (like when they are sick, but you dont know why or what hurts..."whats wrong?" but they cant tell you).

Its been 3 years since my doggy passed away, and i still get teary eyed when i think of her. My hear hurts when i enter my mom's house and she's not there to greet me (I always expect it and its always a let down). Maybe you can create something if Hoggles memory as a way to find some closure. Everyday will get a little better. We love you and we are here for you. Smile

PS- maybe you can talk to your vet and see if they have an event where you can paint to help lower your cost.

PPS- you can donate some time to the shelter and paint there to raise funds for the dogs?

Check out http://www.lionwhisperer.co.za/
google/youtube "kevin richardson lion whisperer"
...Aren't lions classified and known as dangerous? Well animals are unpredictable...all animals, from a dog, to a lion, or a dolphin!

The sad thing about this whole mess is that I have been so depressed and so lost that I am struggling to make it through the day. I can't seem to get anything done. It's not just the death of the pitty Luu it's everything, everything makes me sad. I hurt. I feel so lackluster and so empty.
This has go to get better. I'm cracking at the seams.
