Need some help here...

Post by Tilly - Formerly Punky on Fri Sep 03, 2010 12:00 am

Okay everyone, I am in a Composition class right now in college, and we had a research paper assigned. I really would like to do it on Face Painting, but am having touble finding hard facts about it that are published in books or on the internet... I need both.

The various points I am looking to use are Safe Face Paints, The Different Kinds of Paintings (Cheek art, full face, body painting, etc.), The history of face painting both as an art and for other uses, turning it into a business, and how face painting is veiwed around the world in various cultures.

I know it's a lot to ask, but I could really use the help. Like I said, I need information from both hard copy material and internet sources and I am at a loss for the first and coming up very short for the second.

If I don't have adequate sources to show my prof. I have to find another topic... please help!

www.snazaroo.us has a lot on safety. Otherwise I'd google and I bet you'll find lots.

I think the problem you are having is this is such a new art form & there's not a lot of published info on it. Most of what we read on forums, google groups, etc are opinions & while good material, does not have hard published facts. Do any of the magazines have facts?
I'm interested to see what you find!

you might be able to ask Marcela? She's been in it a long time and might know where to find something on the history of it all? I agree on the Snazaroo source for safety stuff.

What's your deadline for the info? Maybe you could email FP manufacturers for published articles or information sources. It may take a while though. If I find anything I'll let you know.

See if you can get hold of a copy of Christopher Agostino's "Transformations! The Story Behind the Painted Faces" It's an awesome book with cultural and historical information. If you can find enough info, I'd love to read your finished paper!

Go back, waaay back for the history, look to ancient Egypt, ancient Japanese Kabuki, history of Geisha in Chinese culture, the First Nation/North American Indian traditions etc... You can find lots of pictures and info to support this part of the puzzle by looking at books about the different cultures you'll find cultural significance as well as history.

The framework of your project is very close to what I prepared when I gave a presentation to a bunch of fine art classes at our local high school. I just didn't need as much of a bibliography but I needed to fit it into the curriculum. The info is easy to find in books and on the internet.

http://www.snazaroo.us/faq.htm page has a wealth of info about Safe Face Paints, Cheek art, full face, body painting and turning it into a business.
The history of face painting as an art dates back to the dawn of time with with the tribal aboriginals. Facinating, actually when you google ancient face painting.
With all the info, it will be hard to keep the paper short ; )
