in my experience - and i have to say I find my butterflies rather unsatisfying thought the kids and parents are thrilled - I think that keeping the face 'open' away from the nose and pretty high on the cheek looks best... first is how i used to do it.. and the second what i am trying of late

Not sure if my link worked, never know how to do that!!!

But anyway, check out becstar anthony, she does an awesome rainbow butterfly. I use this design all the time, Bec rocks.

I'm sure butterflies will be your favourite thing to do after you watch this video.

A tip that I got off the Wolfe brothers was....don't follow the laugh lines down around the mouth with the bottom of the butterfly as it will drag the face down. Hmmmmm, probably havn't explained that very well but hopefully you get what I mean.

Best of luck Mirandas

I like using a chisel brush for the edge of the butterfly. It's quick but gives such a wonderful look. Here's a few to show the example(missed some details on one:-( & ones not a chisel brush edge:

Ah, after watching the video I went looking for the kit and couldn't find it. I was trying to figure out what brush you use for the flowers and the leaves. Looked like a flat brush but not as wide as the one you used around the wings, is that right? I love those flowers! I love the whole design - it's beautiful!

I have soooooo many arty cakes already, thanks for the tip. OMG!!! The color combinations for my buterflies are endless. Adding the abc's as the outline will definitely set mine apart from other butterflies and give that extra pop and wow factor.

will definitely being doing this from now on

Re: I suck at butterflies!!!

Post by Guest on Mon Nov 08, 2010 3:30 pm

thanks,

i used a 3/4 inch flat brush for the out-line of the butterfly

then, we divided the leaf and the flower in the same arty cake

so, i used a number 8 flat brush for both the flowers and the leaves

the kits aren't out yet...heather and i designed four combination colors last week

i went to silly farm for a week after fantasy fest...

the packaging for the kits is being printed this week...so, i think the kits will be out in two??? SOON!!

each kit makes the perfect color combination for butterflies, fairies and princesses...just takes the guess work out

i'm sure heather will be posting her own u tube soon

we also filmed a new u tube that will be coming out next month...this one takes the abc's to a whole new level;)

Oh thank you Rebecca!! I thought I heard you say #8 in the video but I didn't realize that flat brushes were numbered that way - I thought they were all in widths (like the 3/4"). And, duh, now that I look at my brushes - I have a #8 flat brush that I hardly ever use, so I will have to try doing flowers that way!! Very Happy Thanks!

My flutterbys are always a bit different each time, You can just lay down a color base and add a few tear drops and dagger lines to make wings appear.

Happy campers!

Post by Party Picassos on Mon Nov 22, 2010 11:51 pm

I love doing butterflies and through the years, the designs have changes a bit. Sometimes, I go for a more "realistic" approach and other times, I just go wild! Either way, the girls are happy campers!

It's a TAG neon rainbow 50g.
I just switch it around - pink inside/pink outside depending on what they are wearing etc.
Thanks for the nice comment!

Wow, so many awesome ideas! Here are a couple of the ones I've done, though I'm definitely switching up the way I do full faces. A couple of them are me, haha! I recently left the company I was with, and the way I was doing it was the way the owner wanted me to do them--I think the way she taught me to outline is a little ... square. I like the softer-looking designs a lot more. I also like my tiny butterflies but I really want to work on spicing the design up, maybe with a blendy cake and lots of swirls.
