Party Picassos - love the designs with the whole full wing design extending below the eye. I think that really makes the proportions sing! Thanks for sharing.

rxtorre - how has it been going for you? Any chances to practice or are you still in the soak it all up mode? butterflies are the hardest for me - I've really enjoyed following this thread to pick up tips.

I like it best when the wings stay small-- then it doesn't take a whole lot for it to look "decorated." Here are two pretty unique ones from the Blue Angels homecomming airshow. ( I actually did two boy butterflies that day!)

I like the boy butterfly. I have painted at 3 events where the same little boy (4 yrs. old) wants a butterfly. His parents don't want it and quickly suggest something more "boyish". I guess they don't think there are boy butterflies. I think I might try to incorporate it somehow if it comes up again. Thanks for the inspiration.

I had a ten year old boy ( dressed in a suit and tie) at a party ask me for a blue butterfly with glitter - a gem - and ruby red lips with red glitter....
his dad was sitting next to me and didn't bat an eyelid.
I have done butterflies on boys usually younger then ten - if they get hasseled by the girls in line I always hit them with the " WHAT? There's no such thing as a boy butterfly? or boy lady beetle?"
Shuts up the smarty pants pretty quick.

You know...that is what I am so looking forward to (not having kids of my own). Kids bring you right in the moment. Face to face with what is going on, throw out the preconceived notions, be right in the spirit of now. I think being in the business world for so long I have completely lost touch with what is important. Sorry I digress from this thread - but the whole boy butterfly thing just struck me.

I'm really late coming into this thread! Butterflies are my favorite things to paint, which is good since I seem to do more of those than anything else! A LOT of these are copies from other painters or inspired by their designs at the least =). In my opinion - to make a GREAT butterfly you have to follow the lines of the face. If you think of your face like an X with the center being at the bridge of your nose, to make it look the most natural and really make the design pop on the face, the wings should follow the x's -- as in don't extend above/below the lines if that makes sense. I forget where I read/heard this tip, but when I look at designs and compare, my favorites follow that rule =).

I Love Butterflies

Post by FaceFormers on Mon Jan 31, 2011 1:08 pm

I Love butterflies. There are so many different ways of doing them. I am always learning new approaches. There are some great butterflies here. I am inspired to try new things Smile

Here a couple I have done. There is room for improvement but they are looking 100 times better than when I first started LOL.

Hope this works! I too really SUCK EGGS BIG TIME!! when it comes to the butterfly. However, I got lucky one night I was painting at a local schools market night and I painted a butterfly on a boy who was submitted to me by all of his girl friends (he's a bit of a stud!) I actually like this one it was my first EVER tribal! I decided to leave it where it was as I didn't want to risk stuffing it up. lol!

Re: I suck at butterflies!!!

I did a birthday party yesterday and painted several little girls, who of course mostly wanted butterflies. While I am mostly satisfied with how they came out, and so were they, my problem seemed to be with symmetry. By that, I mean that I seemed to come lower on one side of their cheek than on the other. Now these are by no means the best butterflies in the world, but I NEVER get children to paint on, only practice on myself.

She was so small and young that we knew she wouldn't sit still for long, but she was a very good sitter. She wouldn't let go of the mirror either!!

I loved painting those little girls in the last post. I even ended up with a pretty large tip and the mother of 3 of them wants me for parties and knows many other moms who she says will want me too. There are only craft paint painters here, so even though my stuff isn't the greatest, it's better than they've seen. Practice, practice, practice!!!

I am completely new to face painting, and to this forum, but I wanted to say thank you to all of you for some absolutely fantastic ideas and examples......what beautiful butterflies! Can't wait to try some out. Trouble is, my kids are so fed up with me painting them, they run a mile the minute they see me with a brush!!!

Hmm, I may have to make myself one like that, I really like it! I love the way the pink and yellow blend together and make such a nice orange!

Re: I suck at butterflies!!!

It is a good combination and it looks good in the container so it seems like everytime I do a party, at least one girl wants it. Any brand neon would work and probably those regular colors together would be nice too. Thanks for the compliment. I think I am figuring out why my butterflies come out lopsided. I stand too far back when I am painting. I need to get closer. When I take the pics then I can see it. No one noticed it at the party so that is a good thing.

Monarchs are my new favorite, (although I rarely get to do them because kids ALWAYS want the neon rainbow butterfly.) Here is my monarch.
