Which brown do I want?

Post by chucklor2 on Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:39 am

I already have Paradise light brown, but I have found that it is exactly the same skin color as some of the kids that I paint. I need a good brown for footballs, crosses, and animals. Which shade do you think is better? Paradise dark brown or DFX Essential Brown? I'm willing to do Snaz brown if I have to, but I have found that some of their colors are so goopy that I have a hard time using them, though it seems that the goopy colors for me have usually been the light colors, like light green, beige, and light blue.

I don't use brown that often... Yellow Ochre lots, but rarely brown. I think the one in my working kit is Snaz Dark Brown... sort of a dark chocolate colour.

Now I do have ALL the Snaz browns but use them for theatre more often - doing masses of monkeys, wolves, dogs, etc.

I am interested in the answers to this question as I am mulling the different split cakes that Metina offers. Ideally, I would love to have an ochre yellow/dark brown mix - but the ones in the store are light brown/dark brown, or ochre yellow/light brown. Just tonight I finally decided that I was going to get the light brown/dark brown... but now I'm wondering if the ochre yellow/light brown mix might be better. Oddly, in the picture with the ochre yellow, the light brown looks pretty dark... hmm....

Or maybe I should be asking if Metina would do a custom split cake for me? (Does she do that?)

I just made some splits for DH using Ochre/brown. He loves it and uses it for most of his designs. Really easy to make on your own too!

My Snazz dark brown isn't gloppy. I use it for puppies and bears.

I use brown very little, often I use copper or metal gold instead instead. Like for bears and pirate eyepatch. Else I use DFX dark brown, mixing it with white or yellow to get lighter shades.

Ok. Thanks for everyone's advice. I ended up placing my order before I heard back on this post. I do actually have a snaz bronze that I could use, but I didn't think of that. I'm not sure that I've seen a yellow ochre. Is that a DFX color? That sounds like a split I would like to try. I'm just learning how to use split cakes; haven't don't that much with them yet, just starting to practice. I ended up order the paradise dark brown simply because I am the face painter for Andrew's Good News Ministries, and I was placing the order for the ministry, not my own personal stash. All the paints I have ordered for the ministry have been snaz and paradise because at the time I had ordered them I hadn't heard about DFX, but I think they are a little cheaper than DFX, too.

However, I will remember this advice when I order for my own personal paint stash!

Yellow Ochre is a Snaz colour but there is a comparable shade in most lines. It's a yellowy mustardy brownish shade... Lions, Cheetahs, Golden Retrievers... perfect shade for them.

I like to use it with copper... very nice for animals.

I don't use brown much, but when I do I use a mix of light & dark browns. I also like to substitute dfx metallics for my browns(like copper & gold). It gives a more impressive look. I have the Wolfe palette that shades from a skin tone to a deep brown & use it for fur, zombies, etc.
