Nature Center using unsafe paints.

Post by Keesha on Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:16 pm

Ok, my aunt just informed me that the local nature center has family day every once in a while. She said last time she took her grandson there was a face painter there that was very unskilled and was using craft paint (she said one boy asked for a bear and the girl just painted his face black) I'm thinking about speaking the whoever runs the nature center about letting me work instead. Now, here's my question. Should I talk about how unsafe the products being used are or should I just show him the quality of my work and the quality of the products I use? Any advice will be welcome! thanks.

I would do both. Tell them how unsafe craft paint is and show them your work. The face painter they currently have though, could be an employee or volunteer, and they wouldn't want to pay you or allow you to charge customers.

I have a question, and maybe someone has a link for me... I am trying to find any kind of report, article, or anything that specifies what the dangers of craft paint actually ARE. Obviously, I would never USE them, but I have apretty reasonable friend who used to use them on kids at parties, and when I nearly popped a cork one day she said "But they are non toxic.. and water based."

So, would like to have something in writing to back it up.

I agree, BTW that you should show them how much better you can do AND mention the dangers (And Liability) of the product the other person is using. Also, stress that you carry your own insurance (Assuming you do).

It is possible that they would not hire me, but I think that I would be willing to do a little volunteer work if they wouldn't allow craft paints anymore and would allow me to advertise there. I like to volunteer when I can.

What I would do is "play dumb" as to the painter they are currently using and just do your safety talk about using proper paints without implying that they are currently using bad stuff.
