It's $3/month and about 3% (2.9something) per transaction (swiped or keyed). I figure that between intuit's higher rate for keyed stuff and this one's monthly fee, it'll come out to about the same thing since all my deposit payments will likely be keyed over the phone.

With the Square, in case anyone missed the "fine print" if you swipe over $1000 worth in a week they "hold" your money. I just found out about this. Luckily I can't imagine swiping that much in a week...

businesscards24 has one also, with some different features.

Gotta shop around to find the best deal!

yeah, the one I have says they'll hold anything over $2000/month, but I sincerely doubt if that will be a problem.... even if I were making that much per month (I wish) it wouldn't all be CC transactions.

I am really liking mine! (On an android). My tips are higher than before as well. Definitely a whole new experience to the old credit card nightmare (never again!). I find they hold my weekend money until Monday--but then I can't spend it, so that's good...

I love mine! I've been using it for about 6 months and the convenience is fantastic! It's so funny to watch my customers when I ask them to sign the screen. They look in awe and comment on how high tech I am. If you know me, you know I'm the furthest from high tech. Lol! It's too easy and makes sells. A win/win in my book.

This might be a dumb question, but does the money go right into your business acct. at the bank or do you have to withdrawal it from the company?

I thought people would be skeptical too, but so far, I've had nothing but rave reviews. Everyone thinks the finger signing and option to have a receipt e-mailed is so cool that the skepticism dies down pretty quickly.

Re: The "Square" - Allows you to accept CC w/ your iPhone/Android

Post by Perry Noia on Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:30 am

the rates were pretty similar I think, HOWEVER.... the first thing I think of with paypal is FEES... fee to transfer to the bank, fee for this, fee for that... they'll get you.

We still don't have Square in Canada, but the PAYD reader I'm using is almost the same with the exception of $3/month on top of the same percentage as the square people pay. I'll take it for getting all my deposits the second that they book AND a few extra transactions at the festivals when the ATM is out of cash.

I have the square and can't wait to use it. I haven't had anyone want to pay that route yet but I have it on my board what cards we accept. I think it is fascinating where technology is taking us. Now the small business or non-brick and mortar business can take cc without the expensive equipment. A wonderful tool.

Ok, I hope this isn't a dumb question. Since the fee could range from $10+ depending on how much the total is, do you charge businesses the 2.75/3% fee when it's a big amount or do you eat the cost?

Re: The "Square" - Allows you to accept CC w/ your iPhone/Android

Post by TheGildedCat on Wed Jul 11, 2012 7:02 pm

@Vanessa, Personally, I eat the cost. If I'm charging a client $400-500+, usually they're a corporate entity paying me by check. However, if a client wanted to pay me by CC? Completely fine by me, I'm glad to have their business.

That said, I think it would be perfectly reasonable to charge the client a fee for using a credit card. Think about all the small businesses which limit credit card transactions to over $x amount because they don't want to eat the fee for small-margin items, they're kind of doing the same thing.

You cannot legally charge extra to use a credit card. Cc fees are a cost of doing business just like insurance and paint costs. It needs to be factored into your pricing. You can however offer a cash discount- same idea but it is the legal way around it.

Really?? you can't charge for Creditcard use in the states???
In belgium virtually every shop has a rule: if you pay with a bank or creditcard, the minimum amount to pay should be 15 , if it's a lower amount they charge you 0.50 extra.

they do that here too (fee for amounts less than X) or they make a rule that it's cash only unless it's more than a certain amount.... but it's usually only small independent businesses that do something like that. I personally think it looks really unprofessional when they do that though.

I don't mind eating the little bit of a fee for extra business or an immediate deposit. I agree that it should be included into your pricing.

Re: The "Square" - Allows you to accept CC w/ your iPhone/Android

Post by ambodyart on Fri Aug 24, 2012 9:00 pm

If anyone in the U.S. is still on the fence about getting the Square reader I say go for it! I was looking into the Paypal reader and some others and ended up going with Square. I worked with a children's theater company around Christmas. Their show was in town and they needed retail help. I ended up being the "credit card girl" and took cards with the Square on an iPad. It was super easy and quick. Everyone thought it was funny, signing with their finger. I had one sceptical man wait nearby watching his Blackberry for the email receipt. He received it in less than 3 minutes and was amazed.

I have both an Android phone and tablet and find the tablet easier for people to sign and input their email. My tablet has a docking station/keyboard and retains the touchscreen function so people can sign with their finger and type in their email on the keyboard vs the touchscreen. If I am at a PPF event I try to bring someone along to act as my cashier so I can have a "register" table with the tablet set up to take cards and my cash box. Usually I can bribe people with free henna, cotton candy and funnel cake!

I love how quickly the money is in my account and 3 cents on the dollar is not too bad as far as fees go. I have found this most useful when collecting the balance due at private events.
