How do you make your menu boards?

Post by IamGinaW on Mon Oct 04, 2010 1:09 pm

So, what do you make them out of and how do you do it? I'm looking for tips.

THANKS!

I have 3 types I use. I hate menu boards and only use them when clients insist or if it's a PPF event.

1) word art poster: Ex. The word TIGER w/ tiger stripes running through it. I like this for events where I have to be super fast or I'm painting w/ another painter who has a different style than me.

2) A classroom pocket organizer(it's pretty flimsy & blows around at outdoor events).

3) I have a marker board easel that I velcro or tape photos too. I love it because if it's PPF I can write the price on it & change it as needed(it's also great for practicing your face painting on).

I sandwich pics between plexiglass for my hourly-paid gigs and place it on an easel. Looks nice and is sturdy, but a pain to replace pics. (Which I haven't done in a year or more, lol.)

For PPF I have a custom made pocket chart. The prices slide into pockets at the top and the photos slide into rows underneath. Very organized and easy to remove and replace pictures. I love it.

I almost always use a menu board. My only exception is for themed parties where designs are limited, or super speed painting where time is a huge factor. Otherwise, I want the kids to know exactly what they are getting ahead of time. No disappointment that way. LOL. (Sometimes their idea of something is much much different from mine!) I do encourage them to switch it up a bit with different colors, etc.

Like many people I have several

1. A three-ring binder for small parties
2. A foam-core "science project" table top display - I covered in velcro accepting fabric and use it for my "FAST FACES" display
3. A professional table top display unit - pretty heavy, but used for mid-sized events and large private parties.
4. An a-frame/sandwich board sign that I mount signs on, and also used to put up a small selection when the client requests limited designs - I print off the designs on regular paper and slide it in.

http://www.shannonfennell.com/facepainting.html at the bottom of this page you can see the binder in the photo on the bottom left, and #3 in the photo to the right (the red panel thing).

I use a dry ease marker board. I like it because it's heavy. Looks a lot like psalmbooks Wink If it's a small birthday party, I just bring pictures in a baggy. i'll probably put them in a binder soon so they don't get sticky fingers on them Smile

I used to laminate 4x6 photos and punch holes in the tops, then string them along where I'd like the kids to line up with stanchions made from plywood and pipe hardware (I think I posted the details on here somewhere). This worked well and people liked the way it looked, but it was a lot to carry and took a while to set it up every time.

I am currently using two vinyl banners from vistaprint. I created large collage type jpgs of my designs to upload to vistaprint and have one vertical banner for each price level. I hang these from the front of my tent (or just lay them out at parties when I'm not using my tent). They roll up nicely and are weather proof.

I have a couple of picture frames that bought at Ikea for $7, decent size. I'm looking on replacing my boards, I'm so sick of the wind blowing them and kids knocking them down...Sometimes I get to put them up on the table and against a wall, where they are "safe" but I'm not always lucky to set my table against a wall..
I'll be watching this thread so I can experiment which one works best for me... Wink

Vertical banners - Brilliant!
