Glass/Reflective Surfaces?

Post by Kristal on Wed Oct 20, 2010 2:32 am

I've got a belly painting coming up (ish), and am in the sketching ideas out on paper stage. The baby's parents are both (former) competitive swimmers, and wanted something to do with water - one of their thoughts was a fish bowl.

I haven't decided if I want to go cartoony or "real" yet - but I'm wondering about getting that reflective glass look. Anyone have pics/tips?

This isn't my favourite and I totally forgot the water line and the bottom of the bowl.

I have painted quite a realistic looking glass fruit bowl on a canvas once before and to make the glass look real I worked a lot on the reflection, with bright white block highlights. Also around the sides keep the white quite thik to show the thikness of the glass

I was gonna email you a bunch of fishbowl images I've been collecting, but here's 3 of my favourites. I think it's an awesome belly idea.

I love the fish in light bulb idea, how cool would that look.

A glass look is really all about highlights. If you put a big, juicy, realistic looking white highlight in a strategic place, you'll have a good reflection illusion.

I saw also go to micheals with a coupon and buy some jewelry bling and place them as bubbles and scales, etc... for a 3d type of effect

Realised I hadn't ever replied! Bad girl. Sorry - and thanks for the ideas! Love them.

They did pick the fish bowl design (I had my money on the dolphins!) - and I will deff post a pic once it's done! We're scheduled for Nov 10.

I - bunk! forgot to buy fabric paint - think I'll sponge scales on with interferenz gold, then add some LB...I'm excited now! I've got a 'juicy' highlight sketched out on the side of the bowl, so that should help a lot.

Yay!!

Well, I only have one example of a painted fishbowl, but it wasn't the focus.

You know... your post reminds me of Finding Nemo... When Dori sings "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming,"

Here we go! I added the highlight for reflection, but am not sold on the belly's "glass bowl reality," lol. Momma was super happy, though, which is what counts, right?

I made my own scale stencil a la Anna Willinski and sponged on Metallix gold over the orange, then outlined with gold LB, and I've recently fallen in love with light blue gems as bubbles. It's the first time I've tried sponging a belly, and that was really only because I wanted a blended, two-toned background, lol - my previous bellies I'd stuck with solid colours and brushed the base on.

And a close up:

Also, I used Snaz for the white part of the fish bowl - and I had a helluva time with it, because it kept cracking! I'd have expected that from DFX, but not Snaz. Urgh, that was frustrating!
