I am not from US, but I am curious why people have so much against the health care program. Isn't it good that people that don't have much money still can be helped to get well?

Even as a US citizen, I and many others wonder the same thing.

Lone,
I don't think it's actually the Health care program that people have an issue with here, I think it's the cost of it to taxpayers, how well it will be managed, (the government is notorious for screwing things up here) and what other deals were made under the table to pass the bill to have it. Plus there is the 2 major parties and how they each want to have it done. Republicans believe health care would be bestbought by consumers; Democrats believe government control would be better.

Unfortunately there is no easy solution.
The whole situation sucks.
The way it is right now, I won't be able to afford it much longer as my premiums keep going up every year, (I buy my own insurance) so SOMETHING needs to be done.

Any country (usually Germany, Denmark, Sweden...) that have high taxes and good health care, their citizens are happy to pay it. Seriously, they don't begrudge it.

On the other hand, Ireland has lousy health care insofar as it's got long waiting lists for non-emergency/life threatening stuff (the usual inefficient management of resources issue... but we still get to keep our house if we get sick. Did that make sense to anyone??

And yes Psalmbook, get out and vote. There's a saying, 'if you don't vote, you get the politicians you deserve'. So now for ya!

It's a lil tradition with my mom and I. Ever since I have been legally old enough to vote, my mom and I have gone together. Tonight was no different. The one thing that did change for the first time is that for the last 26 years in the book that you have to sign (verifying who you are) when you go vote, mine and my mother's name have always appeared together. I guess with so many new voter registrants our names are no longer together on the same page. Crying or Very sad

The health care disagreements stem from the fact that there are a lot of stuff secretly mixed in the bill that the people don't want. Possible abortion funding, etc - highly controversial. Also, people in America take pride in their freedom, so having the government "control" healthcare (the idea of them telling you what doctors to use, or whether they think you are sick enough to be treated, etc) sort of rubs people the wrong way.

So that's what most of it is about. I'll just be glad when it's all over with.

I voted with my mom, too! First time in five years as I had lived elsewhere during that time. Nice day for it too. I figure if I don't vote then i don't have the right to complain lol!

Hope it all went well. Wonder why it seems that politicians always seems to concentrate on what they disagree about, instead of starting with what they agree on and then make some changes there. Then the rest can follow later.

We already have that problem... They're called insurance companies. That's the only death panel that exists. They decide what doctors you can use and when you can get care all the time. Only their bottom line IS the bottom line. And then when they do treat you, you better believe that if you had some expensive operation they are combing through your records to find ANYTHING to make you have to pay for it.

I mean, come on. How the heck is having a yeast infection a reason to deny someone cancer treatment? This is what goes on all the time.

That or babies being born with pre-existing conditions? There needs to be more regulation on the healthcare industry. It's bankrupting this country.

Oops, sorry if I opened a can of worms. Not my intention.
I think all countries have their political problems(people are not perfect & therefore it's an imperfect world).
Healthcare needs changes & I'm not sure I'm qualified to say how best to deal with that. I'm feeling the healthcare problems 1st hand as I try daily to get my ageing mother the medical help she needs.
That said, I've been to countries where kids & adults are dieing every day from minor things that we just don't deal with in the western world. I've seen kids too sick to play & the desperate looks in their mothers face. There is no healthcare & you go to the hospital to die not to get help. It really makes me see that I'm happy I & my kids are living where we at least have what we have.

That's true Clayton. You wouldn't believe what our insurance company did to us (and many others) when our baby was born. After the birth, they denied our claims for anything related to the baby, stating that she was born healthy and that they don't cover "well baby check-ups". That's right, they refused to pay for her immediate after-birth hospital care because they considered her a "well baby". Shocked

We paid out of pocket (with some help from the hospital), and about 5 years later we received a settlement from a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of all of their victims. The world is a sad, sick place sometimes...
